Bunkers in Mass
« on: February 24, 2010, 11:07:43 AM »
Most of the places mentioned on this forum are in in RI (obviously) or in Ct (thanks Meg!). But I was wondering if anyone has been to any forts in Mass? I'm assuming that there must be some similiar to Getty, Wetherill, Adams, etc. I've tried to google it but haven't had much success. I did find a list of all the forts in Mass from 1600 on; however the list lacked any real information. Here is the site. http://www.northamericanforts.com/East/ma.html If anyone knows of any, i'd be happy just knowing the name and I'll go from there.

Boston Harbor Islands have a bunch, I know that much.  It's fun to ride the ferries around and if you don't want to park in Boston to take the ferry to George's Island (big fort there) then you can park in Quincy and take a ferry to Long Wharf.
I hide in the shadows and babble about old things.  I appear to most new members of IB.  I might beat you with my cane.

Where's all the snow?? I wanna poke around Ft. Andrews are you near Hull SweetDecay? If you go all the way to the end of Hull it's the island you'd be staring at! I can't wait for winter to be over . . . cdsg.org rocks.

They are getting ready to demo a lot of buildings at Fort Andrews. They had an article in the Boston Globe this weekend.  Work may start as soon as March.  Potentially only the guardhouse, stables,, and chapel will be left, but the island will be open to campers this summer.

I'm from Hanson which is about 30 minutes away. And yes, I can't wait for winter to be over either so I dont get lost in snowy woods and falling through ice knee deep into a swamp looking for a factory like today!

I'd heard it would be this spring! That sucks. Though alot of the buildings are in very rough shape there are a few that I'd think could be salvaged. I guess it wouldn't make it as tourist friendly though to have a bunch of empty buildings. Sounds like I might not be able to wait for another warm spell to get out there. Up for a kayak trip zman?

Too scary...I've seen the water coming through that gap between Peddock's and Hull...Might be down for Hope Island in Narragansett...Later in the spring.  Planning the conference for end of March which is keeping me busy.

I bet! I'd hoped to be abe to attend, but I'm flat broke :( The water does whip through there pretty good, I actually sank the kayak once trying to go across with three guys in it, bad idea but at least it was summer and some other kayakers helped get it back to shore to we could drain it out and go across with the proper amount of people in it. It's pretty calm there right at low tide. I just don't wanna drive all that way and get over there and have to push through 3 feet of snow to check stuff out. Sweetdecay, wanna take the chance sometime this week?

I'll let ya know when I go back to Hope this spring, maybe we can get a few folks for a trip, its a beautiful spot.

So you've been there (Hope) ?  Are the ammo bunkers sealed or open?

No, I don't actually think I have. I'm from Boston so I'm much more familiar with our islands :P Before the snow hit us I went over to Ft. Greble so I've got Hope confused with Dutch!

I'd imagine a couple must be open unless they keep a very close eye on things. We have one 16" battery up here in NH they welded the gate shut to, until someone cut through the bars. So, they welded a 1/2" steel plate over the whole doorway. That worked, until someone got a torch up there and cut a hole in that too!

Most of the time when a place has all those ammo bunkers when you've seen one you've seen 'em all, but every now and then you can find one with something leftover inside. We have another ammo depot around here they flooded for a reservoir, a few bunkers are now a few feet from the shoreline unless it's been very dry, makes things a little more interesting :) I do plan to visit Hope this spring if winter ever ends . . .

I don't think Hanson is far from Duxbury? There are a couple old forts there ... not the tunnels and bunkers type, but cool if you're a fort nut!

google Plymouth Ave and Fort Standish Ave in duxbury and you should be able to find 'em. There's a house built in Fort Standish. Wish my house as built in a fort!
