The buildings on Gallup Homestead Rd. in Oneco CT
« on: January 06, 2010, 07:56:16 AM »
Mystery solved!

These buildings have been abandoned a long time and no one I know had a clue what they were supposed to be.  Most people thought it was some kind of hippie commune LOL and naturally the site of mass murders, etc.

Of course, once you got closer, things looked a bit different and clearly this wasn't a place for human habitation.  There wasn't much for clues at the site to tell you what it was, except for a hard-to-find sign that said it was closed by the DEP. hmmm.

When I had photos of this on the site some years back it was nicknamed the Gallup Homestead Mystery Buildings.  In 2006 there was nothing about this area on the DEP website.

This morning I decided to look into it again, and this is what I found!

http://www.epa-echo.gov/cgi-bin/get1cReport.cgi?tool=echo&IDNumber=110038640682
http://oaspub.epa.gov/enviro/fii_query_dtl.disp_program_facility?p_registry_id=110038640682

It was the    Hadfield Charcoal Company, and last inspected by the DEP in 1987, at which point they noted that it was already "permanently closed".  According to the SSN Death index, Myron N. Hadfield was born on 4/5/1911 and died 1/25/92.

Since 2006 many of the structures have caved in except for the ones that were just shelters for those large tanks.

and that, my friend, is my hometown. Which is why I've never been camping at River Bend. LOL  I moved away 10 years ago but people in town for some reason think I haven't left. haaaaa

I was doing some research yesterday and this guy apparently owned one of the oldest houses in town in 1976.  Turns out he was a forest ranger until 1968 and listed his charcoal company as being his home address (but it was several miles away).

...

But I found out so much stuff I was babbling incoherently for like 3 hours when I got home last night.  Stuff about the KKK visiting town and the date of the large forest fire which spread from Sterling to RI and took many towns to combat...these were all things I'd heard about and assumed they were exaggerations at best because I could never find a reference to them before.  (and in 13 years of research looking for a special cave, I had looked almost everywhere except subjects labeled "sports" and "church" LOL and that's where I ended up finding all the good stuff. hahahaha!)

the fire you mentioned was massive. there's a boy scout camp (camp Yawgoo) that had a lot burned down and some of older trees still have burn marks.
Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking.

April 24-25 1942

I know where Camp Yawgoog is, I see signs for it every time I'm on Rt. 138.  My grandfather talks a lot about that fire but he lived in Plainfield and he wasn't that old when it happened, only about 10 or so.

Awesome!  I'll be prowling around those woods when I get some time soon to photograph that area again and I knew there was supposed to be a cellar hole as well due to looking at aerial maps of the area from 1934, but finding a well is great!  There is also supposed to be a small cemetery in the area (could be just one stone even) that I haven't found yet.

I just found a forgotten overgrown cemetary in the middle of Pachaug state forest....coolest find of my life! Upon further researching names on the stones it's the Pratt-Bitgood Cemetary. Awesome. I've also recently found a well near my property that I went into(about 15ft deep...looks like something out of the movie Labyrinth)  and dug up pottery fragments...also in the middle of the woods near my house. We just recently bought a house on Hell Hollow Rd.

Very awesome!  Which side of Rt. 49 was the cemetery you just found?

I had some friends that lived on Hell Hollow back in the 90s (where those apartment/duplex houses are on the corner) so I used to ride my bike around there a bit.  Pachaug has a lot of history (lots of ghost stories too! lol)

bummer it was destroyed.Yesterday I also found a little caved in hobbit home on Gallup Homestead rd. It had a little stone entry you could walk in a few feet to a half caved in room. There was another nearby almost totally caved in. It started raining as I was exploring so I'll check back soon.

Are you new to the area?  Just curious.  More curious about the hobbit holes :)

Lived in Plainfield until I was 18, USMC for awhile, met my future wife, moved to Sterling for about 8 years, back to Plainfield for a few and now settled in Voluntown. Always loved cemetaries and the woods, now exploring all these forgotten cellar holes has become an obsession.
