HELL'S GATES: find all info here

Previous topic - Next topic
Well, if you narrowed it down to two places, check out both and one of them will probably be right.  (Hint, there's at least three topics on it elsewhere in the forum...)

And there's a lot of cops around there, though it always seems like they come out of the woodwork because it's really the middle of nowhere.

And once you get there, if you're there for any other reason than photography or smoking pot, you'll probably be disappointed.

Haha I'm sorry.. that post was meant to find some clarification on which place it was in I guess and I didn't even think to look in Mills & Farms because I thought it would have been in 'weird shit' since it's supposively haunted.

Either way I should have searched for it first but I figured no one would be talking about it.. eh I guess I'm just getting used to everyone actually knowing so much about RI since it is the smallest state and no one really pays attention to it haha

Again.. sorry! I'll make sure I do that next time, before I post again.

Haha, Hell's Gates pops up in a lot of topics I'm in just because I talk about it incessantly.  I don't really know why, I mean I've been there a shitload of times and there's not a whole hell of a lot there except a burned house, a collapsing garage and a car that's been shot up.  There's a cemetery there too that my friends had been trying to find for years, and the first time they brought me, I found it.  It's a family plot where most everybody died in 1821-1822, and one died in 1845.  Nothing Hellish about it.

I haven't been there since 2000 because it's a bitch to access.  I attempted it in 2003 but saw another person and ran away, and attempted again in 2004 only to end up lost in the woods.  In the summer, horseflies and deer ticks are a real problem.

Honestly, I wouldn't doubt if Hell's Gates isn't with us much longer due to the over-development of surrounding communities.  It's the perfect spot for another 25 houses...those assholes.

Yeah it's weird cause some people say it's absolutely pointless but then I've heard from others some crazy stories about some guy that chased them down the road with a knife haha.. and another of someone chasing them around a big tree in a truck..

Eh, I'd like to see it once.. just for myself.. I actually went there a little while ago (where I think it is anyway) and we just parked right there on the road and started walking down it. It had snowed though so I decided it was stupid to walk the whole thing plus where we were parked.. the only weird thing I saw was the different animal tracks.. so we just walked back and left.

Maybe this summer I'll go again or something, I deffinetly need a new parking spot though.. and a lot of bug spray
It's always raining in my head

I think the best time to go is in the spring around Mother's Day, because that's the last time I went during the day (1999).  It's so nice because lilacs are in bloom and that's all you can smell.  I used to park in the parking lot for the state forest that's right up the road, if you know where I'm talking about.  It's a hike, but worth it since parking right at the entrance will definitely get you caught.  And don't go through the state forest because it's not a shortcut lol.  (I thought it might be, because I wandered around the paths behind Hell's Gates on that Mother's Day and ended up across the woods.  There's a lot of paths back there and we couldnt' explore them all.  So when I went in 2004 I was hoping to hook up to one of those paths, but they apparently only connect at the very back of the woods...so you would end up walking miles through the woods before you found the right one.)  Anyway, the whole walk is about a mile, just because the driveway to Hell's Gates itself is quite long.

The weird thing about going in 1999 was that someone had cut the lawn in the backyard recently.

haha that's odd.. yeah I don't know if I have seen the park, I've always been at night so I haven't looked around too much. Are there other people in the parking lot?
It's always raining in my head

Hikers or hunters...it depends.  Sometimes you see people and sometimes you don't. There's room for maybe five cars and I've never seen it full.

Don't bother going at night--I've been like 10 times during the day and once at night, and at night it's even more pointless LOL

lol yeah I figured that now from the pictures I've seen and stuff.. Knowing me I would fall into that collapsed house or something
It's always raining in my head

Where did you put your car when you went up there?? that is a little road and i know that a state trooper lives two houses before the entrance..i drove up there a couple of times but i didnt want to leave my car..

Ok seems to me like evry1 is confused a little bit...Hells Gates is like off plain meeting house road in west greenwich...The place that their is a tree in the middle of the road where u supposedly get chases around, thats witches road in north smithfield -_-

Okay so I was talking about the right place.. maybe next time I'll actually walk down the whole thing!

Ok, so I got sick of there being a million different subjects about Hell's Gate asking the same questions so I merged 3 of the threads together.

There's another thread with more info on Hell's Gate that I didn't want to merge because it's my intro post from 2004. LOL

Now, you all want to know where it is?  Plain Meeting House Rd. in West Greenwich, next to the state cop's house.  Now I realize that's a pretty long road but you have to do some homework too, I'm not going to do all the work for you.  Nastynate also posted a pic of Ladd School as part of HG, there are no brick buildings at HG.

Nice place in the spring, not worth getting arrested.  Yes, there are wild black dogs in the woods.  No, it's not really the GATES OF HELL OMG.  Yes there are cars there, a VW bus and some other early 60s car. No, it's not really worth the effort.  Yes, there is a cemetery there from 1821-1845.  No, I won't tell you where it is. lol

Then why all the talk of an insanely bent wrought iron gate? :P

I think the gate could have existed but I mean...get a few guys together and steal the gate, so much for that!  I've probably been to hell's gates a hell of a lot more than a lot of people on this board, not to brag but no one can find it (google earth is your friend, so are 1939 aerial maps).

I only know about it because my exboyfriend and his friends brought me there way back in the day, like 1999.  And realizing that if mista v. is really 14 and 1999 was 10 years ago, I feel extremely old now. LOL

I'd like to go back to Hell's Gates, I always say I'll never go again but then I find another reason to go.  Like "I got a new camera, time to go back to Hell's Gates/Hell's House/any place still standing"

I think I'll set out to debunk every stupid urban legend surrounding 1/2 these places.  You have no idea how much it pisses me off when people are like "oh yea hell's gates, satan worshippers go there and kill birds and drink their blood, and it's haunted, I get mad creepy feelings."

BITCH PLEASE.  If you haven't seen anything or photographed anything or whatever, don't be telling me about creepy feelings, you're just paranoid.  I'd be a lot more worried about that state cop next door, yes, one really does live there.  He'll show up faster at HG than satan will, just sayin'. lol

Creepy feelings, pfffft!!!  I had a friend who was all like "I FEEL AN EVIL PRESENCE, IT'S A DEAD 4 YEAR OLD GIRL AND ITS TUGGING ON MY LEG" and I'm thinking....moron...

Not that I don't believe in ghosts and all that because I do, but when it's fucking windy and you're claiming it's a dead 4 year old...you just sound like an ass. lolololololololol

So...carry on! lol

PEOPLE PROBOBLY JUST SHOOT AT THE CARS SINCE THE PLACE IS ABANDONED...

Don't you know Satan shoots the cars?!?!?!  lol

Since you asked, I don't know what kind of car this was but here it is, these are the two cars that I know of there.  The van used to be parked in the house but someone (SATAN!!!!) moved it to this shed (don't know how, it's half buried in the muck there now) between 1999 and 2006.  The car hasn't moved though.

Went to the gate today, i finally found it!  but i had no ide where to park.  there really isnt any place near by at all. Any ideas??  is it illegal to go back there??? there are no trespassing signs all over the other side of the road but I dont think I saw any on the actual path.

When I go I always park at Wickaboxet Management Area, I know it adds a bit to the already long walk but it's worth not having to worry about anyone figuring out where you are or towing your car.  There used to be posted signs back there at the entrances only (there is another entrance a couple miles through the woods on the other side, at the end of Narrow Ln.)  so as far as I know it is illegal.  It will be gorgeous there in another month and a half or so.  Hope you checked for deer ticks!

Thats what everybody says, BRING BUG SPRAY!!!!!!  I also noticed the house which I thought was the state troopers.  its a couple houses down with a pristine lawn and a huge boat in the yard.  Those troopers make so much money its ridiculous.

Well if you try going through the woods you'll walk past huge ant hills and those ants bite.  Also have to deal with horse flies.  Hell's Gates is no easy place to access, sad.  And when you get there you never know if you could run into someone because someone actually cuts the lawn back there, they did when I used to go in 1999 and they still did it when I went in 2006.  Who knows why!

LOL Its so funny that you go to a place like that and find a freshly cut lawn. I dont know when I'll go back though it really is in the middle of nowhere.  I was hanging out in norwich the other night with some friends from the area.  I really want to go over to norwich state soon but the risk is just so high.  But its just so big that i think i can pull it off.  who knows if I'll ever get the courage!!!!

Hah, a bit of a late reply, but yes, I am indeed fifteen.  I'm just looking for someplace nice to take some pictures with something of an interesting story.
I mean, mafia bosses and shot-up cars? Why the hell not?
I was just wondering how worthwhile it is, though. It's obviously been picked over and seems like a bit of trouble just to get to the damn place.

LOL it's nostalgic for me because I used to go there all the time when I was 15.  So...it actually means something to me.

Worth it?  Some good opportunities for different photography, so maybe.  I'd love to bring my new camera there but it is a bitch and a half to get to.  Bring lots and lots of bug spray, I really can't stress that enough.

Hey.. I was watching the local cox ghost thing and remembered Hell's Gate tonight for some reason, i did a search and this thread popped up. I'm older than you guys, just turned 41.
I'll take Megster's word for what it's like there now, or in the last 10 years.. just wanted to post that I saw the actual gates when they were there.
I'm from Cranston. When I was in high school, on a Halloween night myself and 3 other friends went to "Vampire's Graveyard" .. you know, the church, etc.. and Hell's Gate was a side-attraction, lol.
It was 1985. Back then there was nobody on the road, the larger popularity hadn't started yet, and of course there was no internet, cell phones, etc. Certainly no street lights at all in the area, I mean none. Maybe there still are none. Anyway we were partying, smoking, drinking.. my friend had a Mustang and we went up that road going 75 mph or more, he was sooo bad driving so fast we coulda easily wiped out. Thank God we didn't, but there was nobody else at the church. we hung around the parking lot a while, (even then, we were afraid of getting caught, especially in our condition) got back in the car and another friend who knew about Hell's Gate made us stop there.
If my memory serves right, someone had spray-painted the word HELL in big red letters on it.
The iron gate was there and all bent outta shape, falling apart. it did give me the creeps. Come to think of it, I may have heard a dog bark. When I heard someone say about the dogs it struck a nerve, kind of like a suppressed memory from what, 24 years ago. Wow has it been that long. I wish we had phones with cameras back then. Too bad you guys don't have a picture of the gates. I'm sure someone does.
The only rumor about the place I heard at the time was that a really weird family flipped out and all died there. The mob thing has got to be wrong. That's swamp yankee territory.
