Fort Greene
« on: December 24, 2008, 11:10:26 PM »
Well, I went to Fort Greene a few weeks ago, and it was a neat place.  Not as big as Wetherill, but I thought it was cooler.  There was less vandalism, things were more intact, and it had a simple layout.  There's basically one long hallway (1,000 feet long?) and there are rooms on one side.  At each end there are two big rooms where the large guns used to be.  As far as getting in, there is a "back" way on the front left side, but the back side has two easily accessible entrances.  It's really easy to find, too.  When you enter Fisherman's Memorial park, you'll see the old silo-shaped command tower.  There is a hill across the road.  Stay to the right and you will see an entrance not too far down.  Almost all the rooms have the old steel doors still in place, there's a nice breeze which helps combat mold.
As far as places of interest, There are rooms with labeled doors (ex:  Shell Room No. 1, Power, etc.) that give you an idea of what was where.  I liked the (someone called it this) gas-proof latrine.  It's a smaller room with two barred windows, a nice airtight door, some pipes, and a sub-level.  I didn't explore it since my light was weak and I was alone, but from my camera pics it looks small.  The Power room was neat, with some truly weird stalactites, plenty of water filled generator foundations, and clearly visible original paint.  I explored the main battery (Battery Hamilton), and there is a smaller one (Battery 211, see other article) that I think is sealed off.  I got out of there just as it was getting dark.  Not exactly a nice place to be lost, heh.
Enjoy the pics!

Ok, so the pics are huge and I only see half of them.  Treat yourself to my Facebook album.

The large gun room.  The gates blocks the main hallway, but you can see someone made a hole.

The hall just kept going.

There are many bunkers similar to that one at the park. Recently a few of the open ones have been sealed up again.
