14 fire companies battle Sterling blaze
Barking dog warned of danger, neighbor says
By DON BOND
For the Norwich Bulletin
Sterling, Conn. —

It took firefighters from two states and 14 companies more than two hours to put out a blaze that leveled an old chicken coop and started several grass and brush fires, including one that damaged a neighboring garage Wednesday afternoon. One Oneco firefighter was treated and released from a hospital after suffering smoke inhalation.

Melissa Zanis, a neighbor, said she discovered the fire after her dog, Puppy, started making a different kind of bark from his normal noises.

“The dog told me it was burning,” she said of the half Rottweiler, half black Labrador retriever, and then leaned down to pet the dog’s neck. “You told me, didn’t you?”

The blaze broke out shortly after 12:30 p.m. in a barn owned by Nate Nipula of 1011 Providence Pike and quickly spread throughout the approximately 50-foot long coop. Nipula said the coop had not been in use for several years and portions of the building were in disrepair.

The fire, according to Nipula, appeared to have started on the western end of the building, which quickly collapsed.

The fire kicked up showers of sparks that ignited the tinder dry grass and brush in yards and woods on all sides of the building.

The smoke was so dense that state trooper Robert Scavello, who was helping re-route traffic, said, “It turned the sky black.”

One of the grass fires melted the vinyl siding on the rear wall of neighbor Peter Capobianco’s garage. Capobianco, who is chief of the Oneco Fire Department, was working out of town and arrived on the scene to see other firefighters working to douse the fire near his garage.

Another grass fire burned to within about 10-15 feet of the nearby home of Richard Deslauriers, Capobianco’s son-in-law.

Traffic was re-routed around the fire scene for much of the afternoon as fire crews shuttled tanker trucks from several departments to get water to crews fighting the fire.

Although the fire was reported to be under control by about 2:30 p.m., crews remained at the scene well into the afternoon wetting down the rubble from the building and the scorched areas where the grass and brush fires had occurred.

In addition to apparatus and manpower from the Oneco and Sterling departments, units from Moosup, Plainfield, Central Village, Voluntown, Mortlake (Brooklyn), Canterbury, South Killingly, and Griswold, along with companies from the Rhode Island towns of Western Coventry, Scituate, Foster and West Glocester, helped to fight the fire.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, Capobianco said.

Thanks to an unbelievable coincidence, images of this fire are available on MSN Live Search Maps (http://maps.live.com/)

The reason there are three (edit: at least 4) different views of the same exact event progressing over time is due to the layering of images.  The image of the building on fire is only available if you clicked on "Birds Eye View" of the old Marriott Granite Quarry about 1/4 mile away.  I don't remember how I got the second image, because I was so amazed that I'd found a third photo, and the last photo is the birds eye view of the actual location.

Facing north

Facing west, before the fire (OBVIOUSLY LOL)

I grew up at 990 Plainfield Pike, which would be located just out of view in the upper lefthand corner of the first three photos.
