Upton Cave...
« on: May 17, 2006, 05:01:43 PM »
Anyone ever heard of the Upton Cave? Aparently it was some sort of pre-colonial man-made cave or something to that effect. Anyone know where in Upton, MA the thing is located, I've been looking at satelite imagery but haven't come up with anything because its aparently 100% subterranian...

Upton Chamber

http://www.crystalinks.com/mysteryhill.html

The Upton Chamber is one of the the largest and most perfectly built stone chambers in New England and is all underground. It is mammoth - a six foot high and fourteen foot long tunnel leading into the side of a hill with an inner chamber of small quarried stones. The chamber is topped with several large oval stones weighing several tons as a roof and measures 12 feet in diameter and 11 feet high. The Upton chamber has been dated by experts to 710 A.D.1

hope this helps

The chamber, known as the Upton Chamber or Upton Cave, is a man-made cave that some estimate to be between several hundred to several thousand years old. It’s located on a roughly 7-1/2-acre parcel of land which overlooks Mill Pond.

My father and stepmother live down the street from it, I've been there many times but I've never dared to go inside it. Supposedly the town of upton is making a park on a property pretty much next to the cave, I couldn't say for sure if they are doing this for real but the town had cleared up allot of the area, all the brush and what not that covered the near by area is cleaned up. looks good. Just note the cave has a bit of water in it so take some knee-high rubber boots if you ever go in. And also be wary of big spiders, lol.

I've been to a few stone chambers, not Upton yet. I live a few miles from 'Americas Stonehenge'. If anyone's been to any that I haven't shoot me a PM

In Groton, CT there's Gungywamp, which has a chamber and all kinds of stuff.  I haven't been there yet.

Lumix (welcome) do you have a focus on these chambers?  You've posted a couple pictures of different locations.  If you're trying to map out all these chambers, there's one on Mathewson Mill Rd. in Preston CT that looks almost exactly like the one you posted off rt. 102 in the other topic.

Where in RI lumix?

I have a list of ones that I know of from various sources, but have only been to a few, as most books and magazines only list the town they're in and not the exact location for obvious reasons. Some have been destroyed for the usual reasons . . roads, condos, malls, etc. If anyone knows of any that aren't listed yet let me know :) Their size and shape vary, from low, thin chambers to wider larger chambers and even long passageways. I know they used to give tours of the Gungywamp area, but I think they stopped.

Gungywamp still does tours on the equinoxes so you can see how sunlight lights the chamber on those two day so yes, they are not very often. lol

I think they also do private tours when asked but not sure on this.

There's another chamber in Sterling CT but it's not as fancy as any of these.

french125 I mentioned that thing that I think Lumix posted a pic of in one of the other topics but I don't remember which one lol
