My dad used to have a scanner in his truck in the 80's, and we would be able to listen to all type of things like cops and train conductors and things like that.  I'm wondering if a scanner would be a good idea so we could know in advance if someone called the cops on us.  Would old scanners work now, or do cops use something that civilians can't get the frequency of?

I know my dad's old radar detector doesn't work now.  I could drive right by a cop and the damn thing never goes off.  I'm thinking I'd have to get a new scanner too.

Why wouldn't it be a good idea to have advanced notice of someone trying to arrest/detain you?  An earphone might help if you need to be stealthy.  As far as old scanners, I would have to know what you have and Look up what the agencies in your area are currently using.  Monitoring local PD's and site security would def. be an advantage.  Let me know the scanner and your location and I'll try to help out.

I have used totse too.  Lotta good stuff there, just hard to tell how current the info is.

I just helped my dad move so we don't know where the scanner is.  All I know is that he had to put a huge antenna on his roof, and it fell off once when he went airborne over a hill.  He had to get a new one after that.

Hahaha, airborne.  A new scanner will run you between 68 or so $ up to around $550 for the latest digital trunktracking capabilities and even higher for professional radios that you wouldn't need.  I don't know much about your area frequencies, but judging by your profile (BK, CT), I think you'll do fine with a basic model for now. ( until they upgrade)  If your looking to monitor Conn. State Police, you'll prob want to invest in 800MHz trunking capability w/digital possibly.  I've posted some links to resources above, research them and good luck.

68 doesn't sound bad at all.  I just got a new job so I'll have to wait a while, but then again it's been snowy and crappy for exploring recently.  Thanks for the info!  I'll be sure to check it out

Don't forget to check the scanner specs vs. the systems you'll be monitoring! shop around.  I believe Grove has a good selection.  You could try Radio Shack and Ebay also

hey megster i just bought a dual trunking scanner for $168 i have really spent a lot of time with it thats a luxury i havent got much of as of late but the scanner i have will scan 1000 freqs and i have it programmed for my local police and the state police and i have not heard the state police on it yet so either ive got the wrong freqs for the staties or they have freqs not listed on the web i will post again when i get it all fiqured out
