Where do you stash your car when you go exploring?
« on: February 14, 2006, 08:31:22 AM »
I've noticed that one of the biggest deterrents for exploring an abandoned place is not having a place to -hide- my car.  The car's been a dead giveaway more than once and some one's called the cops on us just because of a suspicious (usually out-of-state) car.

The good thing is that I have a new car rather than the one that the cops were "familiar" with, but it's a nice, shiny car instead of a beater so I'm less hesitant to drive through open fields and crappy dirt roads.

How far are you willing to walk?  Do you use parking lots of nearby establishments?  (I know when I went to Rocky Point, rather than park where everyone else does, my friend and I parked at a nearby bar.)

When I was 14, I could just walk to abandoned houses in town, so I was more ballsy than I am now.

Has anyone ever gotten towed for parking on the side of the road or at the wrong place?

Driving has GOT to be the worst part of UE.  Where to park the freaking car????

I agree with Nut.  It's well worth the walk to park and walk the distance.

I know one time when I went to Fort Mansfield out in Watch Hill I didn't feel like paying $20 for parking on a weekend and we walked four miles one way, but that's because we're cheap.  haha

Another time, we were trying to get to Hell's Gates and we parked where I usually do...but I decided that rather than walking a mile along the road and being all shady like usual, we would go through some paths in the woods.  An hour and a half later, after getting chased by horseflies and seeing massive anthills, we ended up at a house by a cranberry bog and asked the people who lived there for a ride back to the car, which was over six miles away (by the road, three through the woods).

Whoa.  You could die out there!
Portable GPS units are a godsend.

By portable GPS, do you mean the thing on your cell phones, or is it like Onstar?  I'm thinking cell phone..then again I just woke up.

As for dying, I think it helps that I never go alone.  Kill a couple friends while I'm at it :)

Although that night in the woods, they were about to kill me haha.

Yep, you could pull up coordinates on many cell phones, the only thing is I don't think that you can use a cell phone to plot it.

I'm actaully thinking one of these:

How about commuter rail/ public transportation where feasible (if at all).  I realize many sites do not have this luxury, but just a suggestion.  How about park & ride?

I'm willing to walk a long way - less long in direct ratio to how much camera stuff I'm lugging but I'll put the car 2-3 miles away if it's going to save me problems with security types and/or towing.

I always park in busy public places such as a bar or family restaurant, a business, a store, or group of shops.  It's worth it - I never ever have to worry about not having a car when I get back, or tickets on the windshield.  In lieu of a close-enough public place I will run a beater car right into a bunch of shrubs or tree cover when possible to do so, no one ever finds it.

When we were just up at Northampton hospital the layout was a real challenge.  The way they've got it secured now, you cannot put your car anywhere on the grounds at all without being questioned.  Because it was a Sunday I took a chance and left the car down on Smith College property.  Smith requires a Smith sticker but their lots were all wide open, I found a little side road belonging to them and just tucked the car in off the side, no problem.  Long hike in and out though.

I guess it all depends on how far you're willing to hike and your bug/snake threshold.

That's definitely the hardest part of UE!  Once I hiked and hour through the fuckin woods in the rain to see some place and at the end it wasn't even a cool trip!  I usually try to find the most public place I can think of to park the car and just hoof it.  Definitely the worst part of the hobby.

I know when i go to NSH i either park at the bar down the road or i park at the park and ride and just walk the grounds in depending on how lazy i am, or maybe how balsy i am depending on how you look at it, if we go to the abandonded neighborhood theres a side road 3 roads up from the actual house that leads to the neighborhood, its on the left if your heading away from the main hospital, and theres an abandoned house there actually lol and we park there.
but my rule of thumb has always been when parking on the side of the road is park in between two houses yards
then each house will think the car is for the other house lol
