Finding desolate factories - pointers?

I've had trouble finding much information about this online, since I'm just looking for the exteriors of large and desolate factories (it doesn't matter if they're abandoned). The external locale is also important as I'm hoping for long open roads nearby with no one around. I'm hoping for one big towering monolithic factory. It's for a movie I'm shooting.

I live on Staten Island and there are some nice gritty areas by the water, but the area is too condensed (narrow fairly busy roads, lots of buildings squashed together, etc).

I'm hoping to find something either in Jersey or upstate NY that isn't more than an hour or two away from Staten Island. I know this is horribly picky, but if anyone could give me any pointers on where to start looking I'd appreciate it. Thanks a lot!
