Point Judith RI Bunkers
« on: December 15, 2004, 11:47:16 AM »
Here's a question for all you bunker nuts.. I was at Point Judith and found a bunker near the seawall beach. I've been there before but heres what I never noticed.  If you look to the South West of the Bunker you can see a old Tower that appears to be a bunker... I found an abandoned road and followed it. This Tower / Bunker looks like an abandoned house from the front,  but when you walk inside you can tell it was an old bunker tower. So here's my question why the Hell would you make a bunker tower look like a house and whats on the lower level of this area (If you've been inside you know what I am talking about) Cool website it's about time theres a good UE site for around here.....

Many WWII Fortifications were disguised as regular houses, buildings etc. The Comunications station at bevertail has windows and shades painted onto exterior wall.

Do you mean the bunker in Camp Cronin? http://www.newenglandsite.com/ri-pointjuditholdfort.shtml
I don't know about a tower though.

Fort Greene South - Site 1-B
B3S3 Btry 211 / B5S5 Btry Hamiltion / G-1 (Pt. Judith) / C-1 (Pt. Judith)
Simulated cottage.

Originally there were 3 fire controls stations here - this is the only one remaining.  It was disguised to look like a cottage, and a wood frame structure was built around the concrete station.   Some of the framing and roof remains - I've included this picture from the RCW so you can get an idea of what it looked like.

A view from the top of Btry 211

Closer shot

Detail of "boardmarked concrete" and fake window

Interior - basement - Communications room

1st Floor stations
G-1 station on left/foreground, C-1 station on right / background

Since the wooden staircase has collasped, I couldn't gain access to the 2nd floor stations.

Looked well sealed to me.  I couldn't see the rear entrance to the bunker - it was overgrown when I went there and I already got Lyme once last year!

I went there a couple of days ago when it was nice out.  I took lots of pictures (they basicly are all the same as yours).  I found lots of underground bunkers entrances which had been sealed off.  But I didnt see any other foundations or reminants of other cottages.  Do you know where the other houses were located exactly???  And has anyone gone in those tunnels ever?????

I couldn't find any trace of the other towers.  They were basically near the one remaining.  As far as I can tell, the locations are now open field near those 2 buildings.  If  you have a copy of "Defenses of Narragansett Bay in World War 2" you can see a picture of them on page 52.  If not - go out a get yourself a copy!  From what I can tell - one was near the junction of the 2 driveways between the existing buildings on site.  The other was at the edge of the cleared area near the road / fence.

You can see the cottage / FC station from the bunker at Fisherman's memorial.
I marked up this screen grab from maps.google.com.
I parked at the parking lot for FIsherman's Memorial (blue circle).  I followed the driveway back up to a dirt road I saw and followed it in ( red line) to the FC Station (red circle).

Note:  I didn't see a single "No Tresspassing" sign following the route described above.

I remember I used to go in this bunker with my cousins in the early 90's
I remember it took every ounce of my courage to go in it...

The bunker used to be open and the locals used to keep up with it to a degree... id be afraid to go in there now, a bit more scary now.
Very cool though if your into bunkers or war-time architecture.

This is a great place to visit

I still make time to visit this area just about every year now that I am an adult.

I went into the bunker last year, they put rocks in front of the entrance but you can fit through. Didn't see anything scary in there, just a lobster trap which was kind of random.
