Hi I'm new here too...
« on: November 27, 2004, 10:28:31 PM »
Hi -waves- I'm new here!

I live in eastern CT and did a lot of exploration around 2003 with a friend of mine (Zack, he posted a couple days ago).  Haven't been arrested but a few close calls definitely made me want to stop for a while.  We recently got back into it :).

I've been to a bunch of places in CT and RI, including Ladd School, Rocky Point, Mansfield Institution (little known mental hospital in CT--big though),  Fort Mansfield, and Sockonassett Training School (too late though--it's already half remodeled :( )

Even though I live about 1/2 hour from Norwich State Hospital, I have no pics because the first time I went we literally got chased in circles by security, at semi-high speeds...45 is probably too fast for a place like that LOL.  We figure they forgot us after a year and a half so we want to go back soon, before Utopia is built.

Saw Broadbrook Dairy on the site--surprised that part of it collapsed because I ate ice cream there only 4 1/2 years ago!  (It was run by these two old people who must've been in their 80's, and the place was so run down we never knew if it was open or closed lol)
I hide in the shadows and babble about old things.  I appear to most new members of IB.  I might beat you with my cane.

Hi Meg.
Nice website you have especially the "hell house" one.
Cool pics, and I remember those Autocrat coffee cans.
So yeah that house has been condemned to nature for a long time!
Welcome to IB.

Welcome to the board.  That Hell House is an interesting find, I'm surprised I've never run across it.

I wrote you two a novel...hope you don't mind!

Thanks for the compliments on Hell's House--I found out about that house while going to Hell's Gates.  It's close to it, but not easy to see from the road because trees block the house in such a way that you have to know it's there already in order to see part of it from the road.  I haven't checked my PM's yet but if you PM or email I'll be glad to tell you where it is :)

I don't know the history of the house either.  There's an urban legend associated with it, about how some guy killed his wife and 4 kids in 1959, but I don't buy stuff like that.  I do know the name of the owner of the property (due to some "Good Samaritan" with nothing to do who called the cops on us because he wrongly thought we were in the posted woods across the street in the summer of 2003. When we told him we had been across the street he asked us if we knew so&so, who we think is the owner. We were lucky we left the premesis and were already sitting in my car when the cop showed up.  The cop was nice though; we were honest with him and he told us how lucky we were that we weren't on the property anymore, otherwise he could have arrested us and fined us $65 for ignoring the obvious posted signs.  He warned us, but you could tell he just told us what he had to and didn't have the heart to arrest us or whatever.  We fully admitted that even though we just confessed to trespassing that it wasn't enough to arrest us.  He just said "don't get caught next time." LOL.  I think he's probably one of the nicest cops I ever dealt with.)

Despite having been caught there, your chances of getting caught there are slim to none as long as you don't leave your car in front of the driveway.  (dumb move on my part, I figured it's in the middle of nowhere enough so I parked right there for the first time that day, even though I'd been at least 2 other times before.  I usually parked at the church parking lot at Nelly Vaughn's grave)

Interesting note on Nelly Vaughn's grave:  When my friends and I attempted to go to Hell's Gates this past summer (long story), we got lost on some trails in the woods and ended up at a cranberry bog on the other end of the woods.  We asked some people who live there for a ride back to our car since it was 3-4 miles away, and when we passed the church by the grave, the guy who gave us a ride told us that the church is used twice a year--he didn't say exactly when, but it's obviously a special occasion so I'm thinking maybe Christmas and Easter?

Hey Megster. Welcome to the community.

Cool site too.  I took awhile to browse around it.  If you don't mind, we'd like to link to your site.

On Nelly Vaughn, we've heard that too among some other things.  Twice a year opening?  Hmmm.  I doubt it's for "traditional" masses although I speculate in saying so.  That boarded up church is secure like Ft Knox.

It's got to be one of the freakiest-feeling places to me, even more so than Mercy's site.

To add, some "credible knowledge" of that particular church comes from someone who I used to know. Their parent was a dispatcher for the West Kingston police.  According to her, black dogs were reported to be seen in the area at the same time neighbors reported seeing "people" around the church.  The police came out to investigate and did indeed see a mysterious black dog.  They opened the church to check inside and the only comment from police was that the eyes on  icon of Jesus hanging above the altar inside would frighteningly follow the police in the church as they investigated.

I've heard that story somewhere before, Skully, although for the life of me I can't remember where.

I did a little Googling and came up with this link; the only thing it says about the church, is that "several services are still held there yearly."  It's got a few interesting pictures, though, of what the site used to look like.

"Black dogs" are supposed to be a sign of death.
So that would equal church, nellys grave+ black dogs=graveyard.

That didn't come out the way I wanted it.

I've also heard of black dog sightings on the Hell's Gate property from a few credible sources, which is ironically, pretty darn close to the church.

Yeah I tend to hibernate and stay in the house on cold days like these.

Skinny guys and cold weather are not a good combination;  I shake like a fuckin' nervous Chihuahua when it's cold out.   :D

I don't mind if you link to my site--I'm flattered actually :)

I never heard the thing about the black dogs before, but that's really interesting that they were possibly seen at Nelly Vaughn's grave and Hell's Gates.  Honestly I'd be pretty scared if I encountered a random dog out there.

Side note on dogs:  Did you hear about the dogs that literally had stakes driven through them in the neighboring town of Sterling, CT?  It happened about 3-4 miles from all these places at the beginning of summer this year.  No one knows why the dogs were staked (luckily their owners took them to the vet and the vet saved them).

Different topic:  Have any of you found the graveyard at Hell's Gates? I did about 5 years ago, the first time I went up there.  At the time I was used to locating small family plots in the middle of the woods in my old home town, so I spotted the area instantly.  My friends (who had been going there for years) wanted to kill me because they'd been looking for it but never had a clue where to find it lol.

And a road trip out there definitely sounds nice!  I don't know about you guys, but I only live 16 miles from there. (I used to live 7 miles away in Sterling, but then I moved).  I know all those roads (the dirt ones too) like the back of my hand, which could be useful...

You found the graveyard?  Damn, I've been trying to locate that for over a year now, as well as a couple cabins I heard were on the property.  Impressive...

Road trip indeed guys.

lol the cemetery isn't creepy at all.

If my memory doesn't fail me most of the people buried there died in November 1821 and April 1822, except for one person who died in 1845.  It's known as the Waite-Ellis Cemetery, and if you look it up on google it will tell you the location.  I'm not sure how accurate that is, but in any case it's something.  It says it's only 129 feet east from such&such telephone pole on the same road that Hell's House is on, not the one we would use to access Hell's Gates. (trying to keep these places anonymous is difficult lol)

Unfortunately that side of that particular road is wallpapered with posted signs and is the same reason that Good Samaritian called the cops on us, and we weren't even there.  It kind of bugs me that he would call the cops on an "abandoned" car parked next to the road...I mean, it "could have broken down and we could have left for help" lol.  Especially my car.   --sigh--

I suppose if you live out in the middle of nowhere, you really have nothing better to do ;)

Forgot something:

When do you all want to do the roadtrip?  Should we pick a weekend or would that conflict with work?  I'm free every day but Tuesday/Thursday (school), but I know my friend Zack would want to come with us and he's only free on weekends.

And cabins in the woods around Hell's Gates?

Honestly I don't know much about the place except what I know from all the times I've been there.  And the sad part is that I never even thought to bring a camera.

Then again I never thought of it then as exploration.  I have hand drawn maps of Hell's Gates in my journal--if you want I can scan and email them to you, so you can see where the cemetery is.

I'm thinking of the OTHER Hell's Gate cemetary in Leicester, Mass.
You all are talking about the one in RI.

lol Spider Gate, right?  I saw pictures, that's enough for me!

I hate stupid urban legends.  It's one thing to say a cemetery's haunted.  It's another to say the gates of Hell open at 6PM every night.  (That was a rumor I heard about the one in RI--ridiculous!)

Thanks!

Zack and I would ideally like to go again during the day, but hiding the car is a problem since apparently it's a much more busy road than I thought.  I was sad that the desk journal we found from 1958 was blank too.  According to sales on the floor in the kitchen, it's been abandoned since the fall of 1996.
