I wrote you two a novel...hope you don't mind!
Thanks for the compliments on Hell's House--I found out about that house while going to Hell's Gates. It's close to it, but not easy to see from the road because trees block the house in such a way that you have to know it's there already in order to see part of it from the road. I haven't checked my PM's yet but if you PM or email I'll be glad to tell you where it is :)
I don't know the history of the house either. There's an urban legend associated with it, about how some guy killed his wife and 4 kids in 1959, but I don't buy stuff like that. I do know the name of the owner of the property (due to some "Good Samaritan" with nothing to do who called the cops on us because he wrongly thought we were in the posted woods across the street in the summer of 2003. When we told him we had been across the street he asked us if we knew so&so, who we think is the owner. We were lucky we left the premesis and were already sitting in my car when the cop showed up. The cop was nice though; we were honest with him and he told us how lucky we were that we weren't on the property anymore, otherwise he could have arrested us and fined us $65 for ignoring the obvious posted signs. He warned us, but you could tell he just told us what he had to and didn't have the heart to arrest us or whatever. We fully admitted that even though we just confessed to trespassing that it wasn't enough to arrest us. He just said "don't get caught next time." LOL. I think he's probably one of the nicest cops I ever dealt with.)
Despite having been caught there, your chances of getting caught there are slim to none as long as you don't leave your car in front of the driveway. (dumb move on my part, I figured it's in the middle of nowhere enough so I parked right there for the first time that day, even though I'd been at least 2 other times before. I usually parked at the church parking lot at Nelly Vaughn's grave)
Interesting note on Nelly Vaughn's grave: When my friends and I attempted to go to Hell's Gates this past summer (long story), we got lost on some trails in the woods and ended up at a cranberry bog on the other end of the woods. We asked some people who live there for a ride back to our car since it was 3-4 miles away, and when we passed the church by the grave, the guy who gave us a ride told us that the church is used twice a year--he didn't say exactly when, but it's obviously a special occasion so I'm thinking maybe Christmas and Easter?
