Dever School
« Reply #17 on: November 22, 2006, 02:02:42 AM »
When I was at the Dever School a little more than a year ago, I found it to be mostly disappointing.

It's very large, but almost everything looks exactly the same: ugly. I'm not sure if it's been discussed in this forum, but I heard that, before becoming a Feebleminded School, it was a POW camp - or something to that order.

The way the dormitories are set up is quite sad. Looks like a dozen beds to a ward, at least. Six wards to each L-shaped building. Lockers at the corner for what few personal possessions they were allowed.

The tunnels themselves were interesting - particularly, the writing on the walls.

It was interesting to see the kitchen intact, relatively speaking. Found a mummified cat inside one of those pressurized compartments behind the cauldrons.

That summer, there was a veritable curtain of flies at every outdoor entrance.

Found an advertisement for Insane Bunkers on a chalkboard in a classroom.

And from the grafitti on the walls, I gathered that the locals - for some bizarre reason -  have some serious contempt for "Niger".

Had to run from a security truck.

But overall, it was the least interesting of all the asylums to which I've been. Somehow, it lacked ... spirit.

hahahaha how many of us advertise IB whereever we go???

And I know what you mean about some places being a disappointment.  I hate it when I get in a house or something and there's NOTHING inside.  I like going through stuff or having interesting things to photograph.  You got some good shots nevertheless.
I hide in the shadows and babble about old things.  I appear to most new members of IB.  I might beat you with my cane.

Dever is pretty huge, there's just a LOT of stuff. You could spend days going through stuff. I enjoyed it because of just the sheer sprawling nature of the campus. It indeed was a POW camp, but *most* of that stuff was torn down before they rebuilt it.

Dever is pretty huge, there's just a LOT of stuff. You could spend days going through stuff. I enjoyed it because of just the sheer sprawling nature of the campus. It indeed was a POW camp, but *most* of that stuff was torn down before they rebuilt it.

I did in fact pick up a few papers that were quite intriguing. However, I explore mostly for photographic opportunity, and found little of worth as such at Dever. In fact, the photographs I've shown you are virtually the only ones I took over the course of a several hour-long excursion. Everything there is so drab - very rank and file, all of it; lackluster yellows and grays.

On the other hand, one who explores only for the thrill and knowledge of exploration, I would concede that the Dever School is a worthy subject. It's an excellent case study in tunnel systems if nothing else.

I never did find a hospital - not that I can recall, in any case; and if I did, I must have been extremely unimpressed, for the hospitals and schools are usually my favorite parts. The Administration Building didn't seem to be connected to the tunnel system, and anyway it's right next to the guard shack so it might be better off left alone. I did find what appeared to be many storehouses and workshops, particularly in the basement levels, and some therapy rooms and the sort.

I suppose I would return, though it wouldn't be a priority. Considering the risk-to-gain ratio, I'd much rather take my chances elsewhere. Not to say that others should be discouraged from going at least once.

I tried to get permission to be on the grounds, but the owner won't hear of it. I'd love to get some outdoor photographs, but ...
