on my first date with my girlfriend before we were even going out (hah no wonder why we date now), she mentioned to me that she went "quarry jumping" somewhere in south county.  Well, that sounded very dangerous but because I'm a thrill seeker I just had to find this place.  Google maps, satellite views. Found it in westerly.

I went there last summer with a friend. It was a great/dangerous time.  Now, I will admit it probably wasn't the smartest idea I've had in awhile, but it was definitely fun.   Quarry was shut down a very long time ago, away from the main drag, and down a dirt road.  There are two main jumps. One is about 50ft high and the one I jumped off of was about 25ft.  Quarry jumping is VERY dangerous, but there were fish in the water and we watched a video someone posted on youtube of them jumping in the water; so we knew the spot where to jump.

This quarry is shut down, but there are other nearby working quarries.  We went when it was rainy.  I've heard state troopers hideout there sometimes.  Just thought I would share another interesting place in RI >>

Wonder what's at the bottom

There was a quarry in Sterling CT where you could go jumping in the 90s but someone bought the property and built a house on the ledge overlooking the whole thing, and the other quarry nearby isn't deep enough to go jumping.

Anyway, at the deep quarry, some mob guys stole some AKs from the Westerly Armory in the 70s and hid them there. The guns were later recovered and the guy in their group who was also a contact for the government got his house blown up.  (I know this sounds like an urban legend, but I can back it up with newspaper clippings and there's even traces of some of the court details online).

Bet you at the very least there's some cars at the bottom of your quarry. LOL

haha yeah I was  thinking the same thing.   The water was so calm and clear that I was waiting for something to float to the top.  I know the some quarries in cumberland were spots for the italian mafia.  They did actually dump cars and bodies! there.

The water was seriously not moving though. Looked like glass.   fun but scary.

we have a spot here in lincoln, its actualy 3 holes but all part of the same quarry. the biggest cliff is 40ft, and the water below is said to be bottomless. theyve pulled cars, motorcycles, and an atv out of it so far... ill try to get some pics up soon

Quarries are pretty fascinating.  The water can have some nice hues to it, and could be extremely deep.  I couldn't bring myself to go swimming there due to what might lie beneath :-o

Its no different than swimming in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Pool in Lafayette Park, Fall River Mass.
Don't worry, if you die....We'll make it.

There are filled quarries in Coventry and Jamestown as well.

Did you guys see this?

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/28429952/detail.html

Yeah, I saw an article in the Providence Journal about this.   A tragic event.  I heard the kid who drowned was from MA but the others were from central falls.

Definitely dangerous stuff jumping in quarries.

Reflecting back on the time I went, it probably wasn't the smartest thing... :/  yeah....

LOVE quarries. theres two within 5 minutes from my house. great spot for atving and bonfires, as well as lifted trucks of friends were you can ride with them while they beat the shit out of them

someone just drowned in the quarry near me. took 2 days to find the body....creepy

lol there was just another article in last Sunday's Projo about cliff jumping.

Speaking of cliffs, I've been told there is an "excellent" lookout somewhere in smithfield where there is a huge rock wall.  Teens use to go there and supposedly some crazy guy attacked people who would explore the area.  Can anyone confirm or deny this tale? Does anyone know where this is?

Why would state troopers be hiding out in the woods waiting for kids to jump in a quarry? lol

There's a quarry here, in westford ma, that we used to go to when I was younger :P a few beers and someone would always jump.

There is an old quarry in Westerly. Used to go there to skip school and party back in the late '70's.
