Maudes Grave
« on: July 28, 2004, 08:13:36 PM »
I have never been there but some where in the Pachaug State forest in Voluntown CT there is supposed to be a witch buried in the section of the forest called Hells Hollow. I have been to the Hollow but have never seen the grave site. I have heard runors of bad things that happened to people who either piss on or steal the headstone.  Has anyone ever heard of this place?

i live about 5-10 min from hells hollow and have heard many many stories of mauds grave.  no one ever seems to know where it is.  the story thats most comonly told around here is that it is the grave of the daughter of a witch.  she was accidently shot by a hunter and her mother (the witch) placed a curse on the grave.  theres a story about a few kids (i've heard 3 and i've heard 4) that went out there and one decided that it would be cool to take a stone from the grave.  its said that the car that they were riding home in crashed and all were killed.  this is all what i've heard from a few locals.  i'd like to check it out but have never been able to get an answer as to where it is located.  mabey someone knows

I've just recently heard of Maud's grave and have been doing loads of research. I've been ot to Hell Hollow 3 times so far and seen and found nothing. I'm making my 4th trip this week and hopefully i find something. However last week when I went out there my friend Charlie started speaking ill of spirits and I took a picture of him. There were some "orbs" in it and when i lightened it up there were even more. I'm not saying they're ghost orbs but they only showed p in this pic. heres the pic:

I lived in Sterling for 13 years and went to Hell Hollow all the time.  The website that was posted confused two very different tales, and this is the first time I've heard Maud called a witch.  From what I know, she's a girl from the 19th century who has a grave marker in the woods and it's a party spot for kids.  Many websites like Shadowlands and others who have copy/pasted info from Shadowlands will tell you that if you drive by her grave and say her name, she'll appear in front of your car and your car will either stall or crash.

The Norwich Bulletin ran a story about these legends either around Halloween 2002 or Halloween 2003.

The Screaming Woman is supposedly a Native American woman who was murdered by settlers back in the late 1600's early 1700's whose scream can be heard today. (And that legend haunts all of Patchaug Forest from Hell Hollow to Breakneck Hill, Rt 49, and Rt 138.

There is also the Guard at Breakneck Hill, who's apparently a Revolutionary War leftover who paces near some sharp corner on Breakneck Hill Rd.

And Gravity Hill was mentioned on the website, so I'll mention that here too. It's at the top of Main St. in Sterling, which is some 7 miles from Hell Hollow.  Leave your car in neutral at the beginning of the road (facing south) and you'll feel like you're rolling uphill.

I've actually been to and seen the grave in question. I have seen people piss on it. Nothing bad has ever happened to those who did. I also found nothing eerie about the location. And this was around the time I was freaked out in a cemetery at 8PM. You'd think being somewhere like that day and night would send chills up your spine at least once.

Not worth an out of the way trip. Stop by if you're in the area, but never search to find it. Really.

Before you ask, it's been years and I don't know where it is anymore. Maybe one day I'll stumble upon it again and update. Maybe I'll ask someone who was there at the time and see if they remember... since it's been known to them and their friends for a long time.

I don't recall liking it the one time I remember seeing it. It was a spur-of-the-moment "Want to see this thing?" adventure. This was so many years ago (maybe 13) and if nobody can find it again, it either takes a lot of effort or it's gone.

I might know the reason nobody can find it every time they go up there. Soon I'll head over and try to draw out a map for those who go on long boring searches for a long-standing myth. That way you can be out of there in a few minutes, having pissed on it and had nothing bad happen to you.

I've seen it once and know people who have been there several times. I believe it can't be found if you are not familiar with it or if it's been dismantled. It better be the former...

I hope that when I'm dead, no one pisses on my grave.

Maude Reynold's grave.... if you head west on Hell Hollow Road it was off to the right hand side. There were many tales of who Maude really was. A witch, a whitch's daugter, a child who died of small pox, a missing child who people were searching for and that night they lit a brush pile on fire for light only to find she'd been hiding in the brush and fell asleep and was burned to death. I have no idea what the real story is.
I went there in '71 with a few friends to get high, drink wine and be scared.
A couple of the guys wanted to desecrate the place, or dig it up. I didn't himk it was a good idea. One guy there got really mad and told them not to do it. His mother had died an couple years before and he wanted nothing to do with messing up someone's resting place.
He was killed just a few months later in a horrible crash on Snake Meadow Road.

That's terrible!  I have still never been to Maude's Grave.  My best friend had a couple strange experiences out there.  Some interesting history on the area though...special research project of mine.  Tons of ghost stories within a 5 mile radius.  Sterling's got a bit but for some reason it's concentrated around the Sterling/Voluntown line.

Hello,

according to my mother this is the story:
Maude was a witch in the 19th century.  She was hated and brutually beaten by the villagers.  Her daughter (dont know the name) was thrown into the big lake (if you been to maude's grave you know what im talking about).  Then Maude was buried and killed upon a tree.  She set a curse to anyone who goes there and is obviously disrespectful.

Stories:
A group of teenage boys were partying all over that shit, pissing in the river where the daughter died, pissing on the grave. you understand.  When they left they got into a horrible car accident all of them died.

  This happened to my family,
We were walking in the woods there, being very respectful.  Then my smart mother goes "this would be an excellent place for blare witch project" STUPID.  5-10 mins later we ALL heard crying by a little girl.  THen we heard a HAHAHAHAHA.  Instantly there was a BIG splash in the water.  we left within seconds.

My friend robby's cousin was driving down that way, going about 60 (STUPID) instantly a girl jumps into the road he slams on his brakes to stop but when he jumped out of the car there were no damage nothing.

Teenage Parties would get ruined by random snakes in the river.

You always gotta go with the best idea you've got. Otherwise, you're just left lying around - not knowing what to do.

Actually I disagree with everything you posted except MAYBE the thing you posted that actually happened to your family, all this stuff can be researched and disproven and it really angers me when people just perpetuate rumors over and over again.

That said, I've heard the screaming woman of Pachaug State Forest, I'll admit that.  I actually heard it at the intersection of Hell Hollow & Breakneck Hill with some of my friends one night about 6 years ago when we went looking for the guard.

I don't have anymore info on the guard, all the newspaper said was that he can be seen on a "sharp corner" in the road.  When the road is open, you'll find many sharp corners.  I don't recommend taking anything that doesn't have 4 wheel drive down Breakneck Hill Rd. though.  I took my old Pontiac through and made it to the other side, but I wouldn't do it again.  It's not paved and usually full of ruts & large rocks.

Nice article Megster, I agree that most if not all of the myths are just that, myths. The article brought up a good point about the screaming coming from fisher cats or foxes.

The "orb" looks like a spot of something on the lens.
The "mist" is probably water vapour or dirt on the lens too.

Look at all the baby orbs in #2, they haven't learned how to flock yet but they're there ! No doubt the fog is a lost forgotten sad spirit.

Try playing this EVP next time you're there and see how the ghost reacts ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyRUbC6F_Uc
