Hope Island
« on: January 22, 2011, 08:28:20 PM »
During my lunch break on Friday I was checking out Bing maps just for shits. I happened to wander past Hope Island and noticed some structures on it which seemed interesting.

"During World War II, the island was used by the U.S. Navy as an ammunition storage site. There are still ammunition bunkers and concrete roads remaining from this period."
Wikipedia

So, now I'm very interested about yet another place I would have a difficult time getting to. Can anyone fill me in on the island?

The island was an ammo depot, the bunkers seem to be the same type as found on Prudence Island, which you can get to via ferry. There are bunkers all over Hope island and the south part of Prudence island. If you don't have a boat/kayak just take the ferry to Prudence, it runs everyday I think for like $5.

I was thinking of camping there this summer, I know it's a reserve, but is it actually off-limits?

Here are the regs as of Nov 2010:
Section 1- Definitions
1.2 Bay Island – the islands of Prudence, Patience, Hope, Dutch, East & West
Island (off Sakonnet Point), Little & Big Gould, and Hog.

Section 29 - Area Specific Regulations
29.1 Bay Islands
29.1.1 Camping in the Bay Islands is prohibited

If you dont get caught, I'd assume it'd be okay.

Dont camp right on the beach and keep the campfire to a minimum and you should be all set . . there are all kinds of places you can't camp, but bums do it all the time. If you bring your ghetto blaster, get drunk and throw up a huge bonfire the coasties might notice. If you don't draw attention to yourself they won't even know you're there ;)

If you're like me and have a 20 ft long bright orange kayak you might wanna pull it up where it won't be seen as well . .

Yeah, I mean people squat on Dutch for the entire summer. Just got to get onto finding me a boat that can hold three people+gear that's beachable.

Winter is finally over! The snow is gone! Time to clean out the old kayak and check this place out.

I know what you mean - people set up "camps" and leave everything there.  Empty tents, etc, in good condition...

My dad said he was sailing on the NK side of dutch one night and saw at least 4 different campfires.
Do you think Hope Island is too much of a liability because of how close it is to the mainland?
(dutch is more well-known but also easier to get to)
