For those who don't know, Plum Island is a secret gov. research lab on an island in Long Island Sound.  It used to be Fort Terry - a BIG Coast Artillery post.  Lots of bunkers, etc.

Not sure I completely agree with the info in the review but worth a look anyway for laughs....

Plum Island? Are you talking about the island off of Montauk Point, Long Island, NY? I thought there was an animal disease research center there owned by the government which would usually make it off limits to the public. Or is there another one? Sorry, can't really look it up on account of using a crappy work pc.

I was just looking at Plum Island on google earth the other day, you know there are rumors of where Lyme disease came from because Plum Island is so close to Lyme, CT where it was discovered.  That's the rumor around here anyway, who knows if there's any merit to it.

Anyway, there's an island not too far from Plum that also has obvious bunkers.

Fort Michie is on Great Gull Island - there's also a place called "the ruins" that was once Fort Tyler.

For a sad sight, scroll on over to Fishers Island and take a look at the gun line of Fort H.G. Wright.  They are slowly making the gun batteries "go away".   Cinder blocks and masonry in one pit, tree stumps in another...etc.....

So we weren't allowed to get within 10 feet of the gun batteries, and we weren't allowed to get inside any of them....kind of a let down compared to my other trips out there.  At least I got to find out what they really do out there.

What do they do?? What do they do?? Besides cook up Lyme disease in test tubes.

They manufacture vaccines for livestock etc - for Hoof and Mouth disease.   I never knew that.

No Chupacabras?? Maybe the gun batteries are where they carry out their crazy experiments. You'd think they would have thought of the vaccine for Hoof and Mouth before they went and created it.

Sounds like a blast anyway, even if you didn't get to go inside. I can see how it might be a letdown if you've already been there though.
