Abandoned house at Carbuncle Pond (Coventry)

Does anyone remember this house?  It was there around the early 90s but when I was finally able to get to it in 1999, it had fallen down completely (!!!).  Foundation is there today (visible on bing bird's eye view) but it used to be so ominous looking, clear across the pond with no visible access (cut off on two sides by brooks).  Just wondering if anyone remembers or (fat chance) has pictures.

Seriously, to a 6 year old, this house looked like the ultimate haunted house. lol

I remember it. In mid 80's we used to ride our quads from the railroad tracks to the house. Back then it was mostly still all there 2 stories with a walkout if I remember right. Always got a weird vibe when we would stop and look around the place. Do you happen to know any of the history house.

Nate

The only historical thing I know about the house is that it was surveyed for the 1944 topographic map and appears there (doesn't appear on the 1893 map).  When I finally got to it I'd gone from the RR tracks too--keep kicking myself that we never knew that way when it was still standing!

Soooooo...did you ever get inside?  Or was it too dangerous?  When I visited it didn't appear that it had burned, only that it had collapsed on itself.   Could be wrong but just didn't see any signs of fire.  Also appeared that what was left of the house wasn't as old as I thought it was when I was little (cement foundation rather than stone or brick as found in older homes)  I don't remember much about the style of the home to give me an idea of when it was built.

Agree that it was wicked creepy.  We got to one of the brooks very close to it when I was little and it just looked so foreboding (and it was a tease!).  No windows, just dark gaping holes where they used to be, clapboards grey and weathered, just awesome.  It was the first thing I noticed the first time we went to the pond when we went swimming with my neighbors.

Where in Sterling did you live?  Just curious.

I never went into it but my friends would, if I remember right one of the walls had fallen either the back or side man that was a long time ago. I can't remember anything being burnt. Your right about it not being that old, probably built in the 70's. I know some people in Oneco that have been there their whole life and are in their late 50's, they might know the history. The last time I was there was in 2002 mountain biking and it still had a creepy feel I don't know. My family moved to Sterling in 78, we lived on Church street above the gravel bank at the end of the mill houses. I don't know if you remember but the corner the gravel bank is on use to all be woods and there was an old stone foundation there. I was looking at you web site earlier Rocky Point brought back memories Hell house also looks familiar.

Yes I do remember that foundation!  My babysitter lived on Church St. across the street from the white house with the barn.  She lived in that white house in the middle, I think it was #180.  So every day I'd see the foundation from the bus.  You know there's a bottle dump across the street and apparently if you look on aerial maps there used to be a barn there.  I used to live on 14-A (we moved there in 1987) in the big house at the bottom of that monster hill, it was white when we moved in and then it was blue while we lived there and the people after us put a huge addition on it and painted it green).  I'll type more later b/c I have to go to work LOL

My house was abandoned for 2 years before we moved in, people shot all the windows with bb guns. LOL

I used to go to school with the kid that lived there before you, there was a trail in the back that went down to the river if I remember correctly. I remember the bottle dump we used to go fishing down there. Growing up in Sterling there wasn't much to do so we found places like this to hang out in and explore.

yes there was a trail that went to the river!  Too bad someone cleared it all out and built houses back there...that's were I built forts with another kid. LOL  And of course Logan's Way or whatever it's called up the road runs right behind my old house.

And yes, growing up in Sterling there was nothing to do.  So many awesome memories though. I mean where else can you get chased by a giant turkey?  Some interesting history in that town too...like when the mob blew up a house.

Since you're older than me, did you explore the mill ruins?  I was too young when they were torn down but I remember them very well.

Yeah we used to go into the mill. If you were looking at it from the road the far left side was just a shell, the right side was still intact. That part was open with some machinery and offices, actually the offices had pictures from when the mill was working. Behind that part was a one story building with 4x8 foam sheets, metal discs, and other stuff. I remember the discs because someone had thrown a bunch of them up hill behind the mill. To the far right was a 3 or 4 story square building not much in there. For us it was a place to hang out especially when the weather was shitty. The thing with Sterling is there wasn't really ever a police presence, so you didn't have to worry about exploring these places. I was visiting a friend last night and asked him about the Carbuncle house. He remembered the front of the house had fallen down but the rest was still intact. He also said they had a keg party there one night and out of no where everyone got this creepy feeling and felt they should get out of there and left.

wow thanks for the details on both of these places!  This is awesome.  Agree about the lack of police at least until Trooper Dragon took over after we moved out.  There were a couple houses on 14-A that I went in with my friends but they're either gone or renovated now.

A friend of mine told me that the house on Carbuncle Pond belonged to a caretaker for the pond/ camp.

Was there a camp there in the past?
Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking.

hmm, not that I know of, but my knowledge of Coventry history is severely limited compared to that of Sterling.  I did possibly find out that the house became abandoned after beavers built dams and the house kept getting flooded.  (At least according to one of my coworkers who also grew up in Sterling but is 20 yrs. older than me, so he's got stories!!!)  He said it was abandoned as long as he could remember.

Wow, so sick.  I was 6 years old at the time, when my family visited Carbuncle pond.  We were walking along the stream, saw that house.  Spooked us all, my brother, my sister, mom and dad.  We grew up in Clayville RI.  My dad dropped his car keys into the stream, and we had to all lie down, form a chain and help him drag them out of the water.  I remember swimming there for many seasons, then we moved to Green Acres in Foster for swimming lessons.  I live in Thailand now, and I am 45.  I might still have pictures of Carbuncle, not sure.

You really blew me away with this posting.
