The Sewer / Re: Elder Ballou Cemetery
Last post by Chuck E. Mong - April 19, 2016, 02:00:30 PM
New user and posting in an old topic but one that got me to this site. I came here in a round about way from geocaching.com because of a cache near the one that is at this cemetery. There's another one nearby that has to do with Cumberlandite a mineral found only in Rhode Island. I once took photos of a band one night about 1 years ago at this place before all of the crypts were closed. They didn't come out well. Neat place. Old stones. Will be visiting soon I hope but I don't get out much so we'll see.

This place is definitely worth checking out if you are in the area. In fact, a trip to Waterbury would be rewarding. There are four abandoned mill complexes in the South End as well as a abandoned rail yard behind the Metro-North station. Here is my blog post about the mill: http://nassahegon.blogspot.com/2016/03/former-waterbury-companies-complex.html
Here is a blog post about the abandoned rail infrastructure: http://nassahegon.blogspot.com/2016/03/on-tracks-in-waterbury-ct.html

My cousin and I explored the Waterbury Companies complex today. We were not able to enter some of the buildings because the floors were rotten and had collapsed in spots. I took some photos of the elevated rail line (some of the last remnants of the former Meriden, Waterbury and Connecticut River Railroad) and of the dam and footbridge on the Mad River. The buildings we entered were pretty underwhelming, though. We explored another, bigger and more impressive ruin down the street, the old Anamet Brass complex. There, I ran into another urban explorer who was armed with a pit bull and walking stick. He said a prostitute was murdered in the building recently. As I mentioned, there was a murder in the Waterbury Companies building as well. These complexes are pretty much open to all passers-by, some of whom have evil intentions. I am working on blog posts for both sites.

Urban Exploration / Risdon Manufacturing complex, ...

This is an 80,000 square foot factory complex in Waterbury's South End. The company dammed a small stream to form a pond, the waters of which cascade over the dam and run beneath the building in a concrete channel. The interior of the main three-story building has completely collapsed. The attached two-story structure has fared better. Here is a blog post with photos: http://nassahegon.blogspot.com/2016/03/former-risdon-manufacturing-company.html

ANNOUNCEMENTS and UPDATES / Abandoned Mill Complex in Wate...
Last post by nassahegon73 - March 19, 2016, 10:26:53 AM
There is a pretty impressive mill complex in the South End of Waterbury. Various articles were manufactured here including brass buttons. There are three buildings, one of four stories and a ruined bridge over the river that once supplied power to the factory. An elevated rail line ran to the complex but was demolished sometime after 1996, which was when I last walked the tracks. There are some definite risks involved in exploring this place. The interiors of the buildings have collapsed in places. The neighborhood is one of the worst in the city and squatting and illegal dumping are big problems so the neighbors might be on the lookout for trespassers. Also, a homeless man stabbed somebody to death in one of the buildings in 2009.

The city of Waterbury closed bidding on some environmental cleanup work at the site. Another even bigger factory complex upriver was demolished a few years ago so the area is slowly changing. The city wants to knock this place down a build a community center on the property and construct a greenway along the river. Despite the fact that plans often fall through in Waterbury, the city did receive a $500,000 grant so these buildings will come down soon. The complex is surrounded by a chain link fence but a gate on the northern side is wide open. This gate is directly across the street from some apartment houses and people park their cars on the same side of the road as the old factory. If anyone is interested in accompanying me, I plan to enter the complex on a Monday or Wednesday morning around 11.

Thanks for your kind words about my blog. Places to explore are certainly dwindling. Ironically, I am working as an intern for a guy who is nationally esteemed for his brownfield revitalization strategies. In case you did not know, brownfields are what planners call abandoned industrial sites. It would be exaggerating a bit to say I feel a sense of urgency, but brownfields are getting cleaned up much faster than they are being created.

"Small beans"

Well, when you consider what is and isn't left to explore in CT...

Great blog though.  I don't have a hell of a lot of time to explore anymore, or even write blog posts, so it's great to hear about new locations.

This is also a small place that is worth checking out if you are in New Haven county or passing through. It is an abandoned factory complex by the former landfill in West Haven. There are two buildings. One is a brick factory building with an attached cinder block warehouse. The other is a cinder block and wood frame building with numerous garage doors. The brick building consists of a  two-story section and a one-story section, both are in pretty bad shape. In the single story section, the floor has rotted through in spots and portions of the roof have fallen in. The cinder block warehouse and outbuilding are completely safe to explore. I wrote a blog post with photos about my two trips to this place: http://nassahegon.blogspot.com/2016/02/239-front-avenue-brownfield-west-haven.html
