Urban Exploration / Former Orbis Chemical Company ...
Last post by nassahegon73 - May 29, 2016, 12:25:49 PM
I checked this place out while waiting for my flight to California. It is located in an industrial area between the main north-south rail corridor and a street called Frelinghuysen Avenue. There is also a huge abandoned housing project on Frelinghuysen. The neighborhood was a total ghetto and I followed a sketchy looking black guy onto the property, therefore my photos are mainly of the outside.

This factory in Stratford manufactured vinyl sheeting from the 1950s up until 2008. Some of the buildings were taken down in 2009 but a three-story structure and outbuilding remain. Here is a link to the blog post and photos:

There is an old quarry in Westerly. Used to go there to skip school and party back in the late '70's.

The Brass Mill mall occupies most of the old Scovill site, but here is a blog post discussing Scovill's little-known eastern extension:

Cumberlandite sounds really fascinating.  Welcome to IB!  As you can see, we rarely post here but occasionally old faces will pop in and say hello.

Nice shots. I appreciate the black and white. It's nice to see photos from a real camera now and then.

ANNOUNCEMENTS and UPDATES / Re: Abandoned Mill Complex in ...

I hope you do get in there and get some good photos. I still regret not going back to the mill I used to work at before they tore it down and I had over 7 years to do it. Bing maps is behind the times and shows it being torn down.  The middle school across the street used to have a huge mill complex as well and I'm sure they didn't fill in all of the tunnels going between those two and the one that was in the lower left of the photo. Somewhere I've got a Bing street view shot showing the inside of the building where I worked which is on the 5th floor on the lower right in the photo.  Good Luck.

The Sewer / New User Contibution
Last post by Chuck E. Mong - April 19, 2016, 05:36:36 PM
Hey I'm a new user here and just registered today. I somehow found this site by mentions of an Iron Trap mine in Cumberland, Elder Ballou cemetery and some other things I was searching for after mentions on geocaching.com. So before signing up for this site I wanted to see any mentions of Fort Getty and found a nice section to read with photos. I'll make a post there another time. I don't do much exploring or get out much anymore but for my arm chair travels I like to use a site for aerial maps at:

http://mapper.provplan.org/ha/

It's got aerial photos of Rhode Island from back to 1939 although the ones from 1985 or so really suck (I don't know what kind of photography they were doing) the others are really useful to see what once was there. In reading about Fort Getty I saw mention of Dutch Island and looked for that on provplan and was amazed to see the buildings that were once there. It's too bad area like this and Fort Getty and others are destroyed instead of finding uses for them.

Keeping this short I hope others will find provplan useful and or informative in your travels.

Peace Out
