In Waltham MA there is a tower built in the 1800's dedicated to a supposed Viking settlement on the site. The guy who built it was really off in his research but the tower is pretty cool. For safety the town has gated the entrance and the lower windows. (There's still a way in but I'll let you find that on your own.) There's a spiral staircase that leads to small landing at the top with a view of the surrounding park.
can you imagine if Norumbega actually existed, how cool that would be...like Indiana Jones lol
That's actually evidence that Norumbega is actually a "lost" village in RI/ central MA.
According to Jean Allefonsce norumbega is an indian town. He reported that when he went south from Newfoundland and he discovered a great river. "The river is more than 40 leagues wide at its entrance and retains its width some thirty or forty leagues. It is full of Islands, which stretch some ten or twelve leagues into the sea. ... Fifteen leagues within this river there is a town called Norombega, with clever inhabitants, who trade in furs of all sorts; the town folk are dressed in furs..." Narragansett Bay and West Penobscot Bay both fit this description. David Ingram the man who started the legend was picked up in the Harbor of St mary's and he stated the city was not to far away from there. the harbor of st mary's is now called boston harbor. (Historians believe in his fragile state of mind, he confused the discoveries in South America with a humble indian trading village.)
I would love it if it was an actual city of gold and pearls, especially if I was the one to find it.

Did I read in Weird New England that it could have been located in Maine though? First time I heard it could be in RI.
Makes you wonder what's related to it if it was in RI, after all you've got the Newport Tower that no one seems to know what it's there for.
