Title: HELL'S GATES: find all info here
Post by: MovingUnit on May 16, 2004, 10:04:16 PM
Hey all,
I'm new here...actually I've been lurking around for a while, but I actually had something worth posting.
In West Greenwich, there's a location that I've heard referred to as Hell's Gate, which I've been searching for for over a year.  Today, lo and behold, my girlfriend and I finally found it.  It's a pretty interesting place - a half-burnt down house along with another abandoned structure fairly intact behind it.  There's also the wreckage of a couple cars with bullet holes lying around the property, along with about fifteen laundry baskets (?) lying here and there.  All located in a large clearing about a mile hike into the woods.  We spent about an hour there, and eventually got spooked because we kept hearing clanging noises coming from the treeline behind us.
I took some pictures, which are located at http://photos.yahoo.com/travman342 (http://photos.yahoo.com/travman342) (along with some other stuff, including some interesting abandoned missions I visited in San Antonio, TX).

My question is, does anyone know the history behind this place?  Any help would be much appreciated.

spacemonkey684,
Awesome pics!  I think I've been to Hell's Gate drunk one night when I was in high school.  Dakiel I think knows more.

I'm surprised that you didn't visit our other favorite vampire while you were out there in West Greenwich.  She's on Old Plain Meeting House Road.

Ciao

Thank you Skully.

We actually went to visit miss Vaughn before we went to Hell's Gate, but we've both been there so many times that it's just gotten uninteresting.

Well, today, we took another trip out there and I got some more good pics, which I uploaded already to my webpage; check 'em out.  The only downside of the trip was I found TEN friggin' ticks on me when we were driving back home!

Later.

I've heard two rumors surrounding Hell's Gates. One is that the house burned down as a result of witchcraft, and that the forces of Hell twisted the iron gates that once guarded the entrance to the long dirt road. At least one of the gate doors is still around, but you have to look hard for it.

The other is that the house belonged to the mob, and was ruined in a police raid.

There are actually more structures out there in the woods, as well as two historic cemetaries, one of which may be undocumented, though I would have to look further into that.

There are also rumors of witchraft still being practiced there. I have, in fact, found a circle of candles by the well on the third of the three times I've been there.

Which Hell's Gate is this forum about?
Never heard of a hells gate in RI, especially  a ritzy neighborhood like West Greenwich of all places! :o

I do know of the Spiders Gate cemetary in Leicester, Mass. Most people think it's in Worcester, but it's not.

Spiders gate is sometimes known as Hell's Gate.

Any clarifications please?

<Comes out of hiding...dusts self off>

Well, the Hell's Gate we are talking about is indeed in West Greenwich.

The history of this location is still a mystery to me. I've heard two explanations as to it's origins. One, that the property once belonged to the family of a mob boss, and got abandoned after a tragic shootout with the police. Or two, that it once housed a witch and was burned down by locals. On the property is a large, heavy iron gate that is curiously bent in a way that it would appear no man or machine could have done such work . It is said when the witch was killed, she put a curse on the area and the forces of Hell bent the gate; hence the name Hell's Gate.

I created a page for it over on the uer.ca location database:

http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=21766 (http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=21766)

Hope this is helpful.

As for the hell's gate in EG.  I have never heard of it. Cool pics tho.
Not to be a smart ass, but have you tried city hall and looked at the land records to see who may have owned it?

Haha glad I turned you on to another forum; everyone is pretty nice over there.  We'll probably bump into each other sometime - my username is Moving Unit there.

Anyways,  it's ironic you mention looking up land records, because I was considering heading up there tomorrow to do just that.  I'll let you all know how that goes.

There's another location that I'm currently researching as well - a HUGE mill down on the coast of RI that's been abandoned since 1958, and is still pretty much intact.

Let me know how it goes for the land records for the Hels Gate.

In the exploration of nellys grave you showed a picture of the intersection and labled it as "the gates of hell". But from what i have read the gates of hell are about a half mile before the church and gravesite on your left.  There was a mansion that stood but was burnt down, a mothers son comitted suicide there and then she was murdered, i beleive it was mary brown, not to be confused with mercy brown. I didn't know if this was known by anyone on the board, I just wanted to let you know.

so, we went to hells gates tonight. first we went to nelly's grave which was alright. nothing happened. no one was there. then we were looking for hells gates, but we thought we hadnt found it then we saw two cars and a bunch of kids. so i threw the car into reverse and they all hid. but then i asked them what they were doing and where hells gates were and they said right here so we pulled off the road. they had said they went in and got about half way and got chased out by dogs. so the three of us were like riiight and then we talked two of them into going back in. we walked all the way to the house checked it out and then went back. nothing happened to us. according to the kid that was with us he could "feel" something around him and another one of us said she could hear footsteps? but nothing happened like the storys we had heard. so we got back got into the car and left because the cops had shown up while we were out there. If anyone has gone and has had any experiences let me know. always want to hear what goes on out there.

I've been to Hell's Gates lots of times, but haven't gone in about 5 years.  My friend and I tried going about a year ago but while we were walking down the road we saw some guy far ahead of us and we booked.  Those of you who know where Hell's Gates are, don't park in front of the entrance--cops patrol the place all the time.  I know it's a long walk already, but you *really* have to park farther away.

And I thought that was the one I was referring to, but the topic that has a lot of details about the place is in the General Topics category and I don't blame you for not having found it (my fault).

Hey.. I've heard about a place called Hells Gate but I'm not sure of the actual location .. I've narrowed it down to two places and I know you're not supposed to give exact locations on here.. but if you've heard of this place could you give me information on what it is exactly.. and is it in Exeter/West Greenwich near Nellie's Grave?

Thanks!

Well, if you narrowed it down to two places, check out both and one of them will probably be right.  (Hint, there's at least three topics on it elsewhere in the forum...)

And there's a lot of cops around there, though it always seems like they come out of the woodwork because it's really the middle of nowhere.

And once you get there, if you're there for any other reason than photography or smoking pot, you'll probably be disappointed.

Haha I'm sorry.. that post was meant to find some clarification on which place it was in I guess and I didn't even think to look in Mills & Farms because I thought it would have been in 'weird shit' since it's supposively haunted.

Either way I should have searched for it first but I figured no one would be talking about it.. eh I guess I'm just getting used to everyone actually knowing so much about RI since it is the smallest state and no one really pays attention to it haha

Again.. sorry! I'll make sure I do that next time, before I post again.

Post by: Megster on February 16, 2006, 11:50:41 AM
Haha, Hell's Gates pops up in a lot of topics I'm in just because I talk about it incessantly.  I don't really know why, I mean I've been there a shitload of times and there's not a whole hell of a lot there except a burned house, a collapsing garage and a car that's been shot up.  There's a cemetery there too that my friends had been trying to find for years, and the first time they brought me, I found it.  It's a family plot where most everybody died in 1821-1822, and one died in 1845.  Nothing Hellish about it.

I haven't been there since 2000 because it's a bitch to access.  I attempted it in 2003 but saw another person and ran away, and attempted again in 2004 only to end up lost in the woods.  In the summer, horseflies and deer ticks are a real problem.

Honestly, I wouldn't doubt if Hell's Gates isn't with us much longer due to the over-development of surrounding communities.  It's the perfect spot for another 25 houses...those assholes.
Title: Re: Hells Gate
Post by: XxCieloxX on February 16, 2006, 02:55:09 PM
Yeah it's weird cause some people say it's absolutely pointless but then I've heard from others some crazy stories about some guy that chased them down the road with a knife haha.. and another of someone chasing them around a big tree in a truck..

Eh, I'd like to see it once.. just for myself.. I actually went there a little while ago (where I think it is anyway) and we just parked right there on the road and started walking down it. It had snowed though so I decided it was stupid to walk the whole thing plus where we were parked.. the only weird thing I saw was the different animal tracks.. so we just walked back and left.

Maybe this summer I'll go again or something, I deffinetly need a new parking spot though.. and a lot of bug spray

I think the best time to go is in the spring around Mother's Day, because that's the last time I went during the day (1999).  It's so nice because lilacs are in bloom and that's all you can smell.  I used to park in the parking lot for the state forest that's right up the road, if you know where I'm talking about.  It's a hike, but worth it since parking right at the entrance will definitely get you caught.  And don't go through the state forest because it's not a shortcut lol.  (I thought it might be, because I wandered around the paths behind Hell's Gates on that Mother's Day and ended up across the woods.  There's a lot of paths back there and we couldnt' explore them all.  So when I went in 2004 I was hoping to hook up to one of those paths, but they apparently only connect at the very back of the woods...so you would end up walking miles through the woods before you found the right one.)  Anyway, the whole walk is about a mile, just because the driveway to Hell's Gates itself is quite long.

The weird thing about going in 1999 was that someone had cut the lawn in the backyard recently.

haha that's odd.. yeah I don't know if I have seen the park, I've always been at night so I haven't looked around too much. Are there other people in the parking lot?
Title: Re: Hells Gate

Hikers or hunters...it depends.  Sometimes you see people and sometimes you don't. There's room for maybe five cars and I've never seen it full.

Don't bother going at night--I've been like 10 times during the day and once at night, and at night it's even more pointless LOL

Ok, so I got sick of there being a million different subjects about Hell's Gate asking the same questions so I merged 3 of the threads together.

There's another thread with more info on Hell's Gate that I didn't want to merge because it's my intro post from 2004. LOL

Now, you all want to know where it is?  Plain Meeting House Rd. in West Greenwich, next to the state cop's house.  Now I realize that's a pretty long road but you have to do some homework too, I'm not going to do all the work for you.  Nastynate also posted a pic of Ladd School as part of HG, there are no brick buildings at HG.

Nice place in the spring, not worth getting arrested.  Yes, there are wild black dogs in the woods.  No, it's not really the GATES OF HELL OMG.  Yes there are cars there, a VW bus and some other early 60s car. No, it's not really worth the effort.  Yes, there is a cemetery there from 1821-1845.  No, I won't tell you where it is. lol

I think the gate could have existed but I mean...get a few guys together and steal the gate, so much for that!  I've probably been to hell's gates a hell of a lot more than a lot of people on this board, not to brag but no one can find it (google earth is your friend, so are 1939 aerial maps).

I only know about it because my exboyfriend and his friends brought me there way back in the day, like 1999.  And realizing that if mista v. is really 14 and 1999 was 10 years ago, I feel extremely old now. LOL

I'd like to go back to Hell's Gates, I always say I'll never go again but then I find another reason to go.  Like "I got a new camera, time to go back to Hell's Gates/Hell's House/any place still standing"

I think I'll set out to debunk every stupid urban legend surrounding 1/2 these places.  You have no idea how much it pisses me off when people are like "oh yea hell's gates, satan worshippers go there and kill birds and drink their blood, and it's haunted, I get mad creepy feelings."

BITCH PLEASE.  If you haven't seen anything or photographed anything or whatever, don't be telling me about creepy feelings, you're just paranoid.  I'd be a lot more worried about that state cop next door, yes, one really does live there.  He'll show up faster at HG than satan will, just sayin'. lol

Creepy feelings, pfffft!!!  I had a friend who was all like "I FEEL AN EVIL PRESENCE, IT'S A DEAD 4 YEAR OLD GIRL AND ITS TUGGING ON MY LEG" and I'm thinking....moron...

Not that I don't believe in ghosts and all that because I do, but when it's fucking windy and you're claiming it's a dead 4 year old...you just sound like an ass. lolololololololol

So...carry on! lol

Since you asked, I don't know what kind of car this was but here it is, these are the two cars that I know of there.  The van used to be parked in the house but someone (SATAN!!!!) moved it to this shed (don't know how, it's half buried in the muck there now) between 1999 and 2006.  The car hasn't moved though.

When I go I always park at Wickaboxet Management Area, I know it adds a bit to the already long walk but it's worth not having to worry about anyone figuring out where you are or towing your car.  There used to be posted signs back there at the entrances only (there is another entrance a couple miles through the woods on the other side, at the end of Narrow Ln.)  so as far as I know it is illegal.  It will be gorgeous there in another month and a half or so.  Hope you checked for deer ticks!

Well if you try going through the woods you'll walk past huge ant hills and those ants bite.  Also have to deal with horse flies.  Hell's Gates is no easy place to access, sad.  And when you get there you never know if you could run into someone because someone actually cuts the lawn back there, they did when I used to go in 1999 and they still did it when I went in 2006.  Who knows why!

LOL Its so funny that you go to a place like that and find a freshly cut lawn. I dont know when I'll go back though it really is in the middle of nowhere.  I was hanging out in norwich the other night with some friends from the area.  I really want to go over to norwich state soon but the risk is just so high.  But its just so big that i think i can pull it off.  who knows if I'll ever get the courage!!!!

Hah, a bit of a late reply, but yes, I am indeed fifteen.  I'm just looking for someplace nice to take some pictures with something of an interesting story.
I mean, mafia bosses and shot-up cars? Why the hell not?
I was just wondering how worthwhile it is, though. It's obviously been picked over and seems like a bit of trouble just to get to the damn place.

LOL it's nostalgic for me because I used to go there all the time when I was 15.  So...it actually means something to me.

Worth it?  Some good opportunities for different photography, so maybe.  I'd love to bring my new camera there but it is a bitch and a half to get to.  Bring lots and lots of bug spray, I really can't stress that enough.

Hey.. I was watching the local cox ghost thing and remembered Hell's Gate tonight for some reason, i did a search and this thread popped up. I'm older than you guys, just turned 41.
I'll take Megster's word for what it's like there now, or in the last 10 years.. just wanted to post that I saw the actual gates when they were there.
I'm from Cranston. When I was in high school, on a Halloween night myself and 3 other friends went to "Vampire's Graveyard" .. you know, the church, etc.. and Hell's Gate was a side-attraction, lol.
It was 1985. Back then there was nobody on the road, the larger popularity hadn't started yet, and of course there was no internet, cell phones, etc. Certainly no street lights at all in the area, I mean none. Maybe there still are none. Anyway we were partying, smoking, drinking.. my friend had a Mustang and we went up that road going 75 mph or more, he was sooo bad driving so fast we coulda easily wiped out. Thank God we didn't, but there was nobody else at the church. we hung around the parking lot a while, (even then, we were afraid of getting caught, especially in our condition) got back in the car and another friend who knew about Hell's Gate made us stop there.
If my memory serves right, someone had spray-painted the word HELL in big red letters on it.
The iron gate was there and all bent outta shape, falling apart. it did give me the creeps. Come to think of it, I may have heard a dog bark. When I heard someone say about the dogs it struck a nerve, kind of like a suppressed memory from what, 24 years ago. Wow has it been that long. I wish we had phones with cameras back then. Too bad you guys don't have a picture of the gates. I'm sure someone does.
The only rumor about the place I heard at the time was that a really weird family flipped out and all died there. The mob thing has got to be wrong. That's swamp yankee territory.

one small correction after remembering more and checking the 1985 calendar.. the night i went was Friday, Nov 1.. the night after Halloween. Maybe that explains why we didn't see any others at the graveyard.

peace

Now this is interesting!  Only a couple people besides you and me and the guy who started this topic actually know where the cemetery is anymore.

On Nov. 1, 1985...I wasn't even 2 yet. LOL.

Thanks for clarifying what this place was like back in the 80's, aerial maps aren't too clear on when the house burned but you can access aerials dating back to 1939.   Interesting info about those can be determined from the maps.  Your explanation of the story sounds like one I heard for a nearby house (aptly named "Hell's House") where the whole family was supposedly killed in 1959 or some crap.  The actual story is much different once you get names of former occupants, one of whom is alive today, age 89, living in Charleston.  But...that's Hell's House, not Hell's Gates, even though it's in close proximity to both Vampire's Grave and Hell's Gates.

Are there any other places you've been to that you'd like to elaborate on?  Welcome to the board, other perspectives are always welcome :).

15 year difference in age, it only seems like a lot when you're young.
But the changes in this world over a 15 year time have been accelerating.
hmm.. "Hell's House" .. maybe he got the stories confused.
Did Nelly Vaughn live near Hell's Gate property ? I thought he said that too.

Other places, there are some, like an abandoned milking facility in back of my parents house.. i thought that felt weird when I went there. Someone spray-painted long skulls in it. Had a funny feeling when i stepped into the foundation of it. it's all overgrown now. I used to go a lot of places in the countryside, especially when it wasn't so overgrown or built-up, there were trails I would ride my dirt bike on. I heard you can't even ride at the Coventry sand dunes anymore. There was a haunted house over here I remember going in as a kid, and being frightened, it was abandoned, but it's just not there anymore.
I remember some story about a farm field on Central Ave in Johnston, near 116.. off a windy road, called Blood Field. lol.. it's just an empty field now.
have to look around the site here more. Nice talking to you Megster.

you know what, the rumor of the weird family that flipped out and died is also related to another nearby abandoned house (so-called Hell's House! HOW CREATIVE).  It's like...if Hell's Gates and Vampire's Grave made a triangle, Hell's House would be the third point on that triangle.  But I'm on the verge of finding out the real story with that house, possibly involves death but it's NOT madhomicideurbanlegendomgwithsparklingvampires!!!!!!11one!!!!!

PS. I moved this topic out of Mills and Farms to Urban Exploration because it seems like everybody wants all info everrrrr on Hell's Gates so I decided to put it front and center so it's easy to find!  weeee

I still haven't been to look up the land records on it, been too busy with work, social life and exploring.  I figure some rainy day soon I'll head up to the library or town hall there.

Got the information. Hell's Gate is officially OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! You can park on Plain Meeting House road and walk to the site. The entire area, all 1,790 acres are owned by the Nature Conservancy. I've even dup up the town records of the property. The earliest owner the town lists for that propery is Umberto Patalano who purchased the property in 1943. If there were previous owners, they arent listed in the assessors office. (maybe with more digging they can be found) The Patalano's owned the land till 1990 when it was purchased by Philip Noel and then sold to developers in 1996, 2004, 2006 and then Conservancy in 2006 & 2008. Parts being sold off individually.

Blood field is really just Baldwin Field, AKA Baldwin Farm.  They still harvest hay but not much else and there have been various deals going to develop the propoerty but nothing large scale has made it by the town council.  There is still a barn with some old equipment around it behind a barbed wire fence on one side of the road and some of the land on  the other has been developed into home sites.   Blood field is something the kids are passisng around that never existed until a few years ago and is probably born out of kids being chased off of neighboring propoerties they wandered onto or by developers during one of a thousand surveys.

I went to Hell's Gate a few weekends ago. Unfortunately, the house is no longer standing, but there are a few remnants left. I was able to find the cemetery at the end of the property as well. It's right off the Flintlock Trail, which is now open to the public. Since the house is no longer standing and I didn't want to waste my trip, I decided to hike the trail, which is a nice, scenic walk, by the way.

On the other hand, I did find an abandoned cabin off of Narrow Lane. After walking a little less than a quarter of a mile or so, you'll come to a clearing where loggers have been working lately.  The cabin is in the woods to the right of the clearing.

Here's a video I took of the cabin:

You're right, that cabin is badass!  You said near the end of Narrow Ln...near where Welch Hollow Rd. crosses?  That's near the cranberry bog and I've walked the whole length from Narrow Ln. to Hell's Gate without ever finding the cabin...though I think a good look at Bing maps might be a good idea now!  Thanks for the video and I'm going to check out that hiking trail too, I do know where to park for it :).

Hi I use to live in Rhode Island and have had friends that have experinced stuff at hells gates. Well I heard of two stories for thats place. One is that there was a party and all the adults where downstairs partying. There was a little boy upstairs and he fell out the window and got impailed by one of the spears on the gates. Then the house was on fire and no one could get out and everyone died. The other one was that there was a police and mob shoot out. i hope this helped. I cant wait to find it. maybe you could give me directions.

Please pm me with the location, I tried going there with my buddy tonight and we almost got lost in the woods. We went on a house roud and parked in a park area with almost getting lost results.  If anyone could give me better directions I would appreciate it.
Title: Re: HELL'S GATES: find all info here
Post by: Megster on September 22, 2010, 07:09:45 AM
No. I've stopped giving directions to anyone who asks because if you open your eyes and read this topic the answer is here SEVERAL TIMES.

Frankly I'm sick and tired of people emailing me, finding me on facebook or myspace or whereever and asking.  This is the single most asked question I've ever been asked in my life and it's really never ending, so I'm not telling anymore.  I won't even reply to anything other than insanebunkers as far as this topic is concerned.

If you really think this is worth it in any way, shape, or form, go buy one of those handheld gps things that you can put the coordinates into.  Or plug the coordinates I already posted (THIS IS THE EXACT LOCATION, IT DOESN'T GET BETTER THAN THIS, ABSOLUTELY NO WAY CAN IT GET MORE EXACT OR MORE DETAILED) into google earth.

STOP ASKING

IT'S NOT WORTH THE EFFORT ANYWAY

I mean, if you're not going to put the effort into reading this topic where the location's probably posted 3 times, you don't deserve to find it.  Go get lost in the woods.  I don't care.

And I'm done.
Title: Re: HELL'S GATES: find all info here
Post by: beatkeeper1 on September 22, 2010, 12:41:21 PM
relax now,  I didn't notice the coordinates til after I posted that. That's a whole lot of effort to type that out, I don't know who has that much time on their hands.
Title: Re: HELL'S GATES: find all info here
Post by: Megster on September 22, 2010, 08:39:49 PM
lol most of the time the people who want to know where HG is don't stick around to participate in any topics or even reply back to emails I used to answer with a thanks, so after 20,30 times of typing the same crap over and over you just get sick of it.  Anyway it's nice to see you're actually adding something worth reading in other topics. LOL

So are you going to go out there or what?  I'll give you a bit of useful info: if you do end up lost in the woods 1) there's lots of paths leading back to the management area which is where I usually park, they just take a while 2) watch out for wild dogs 3) bring bug spray 4) deer ticks are in abundance here (real deer ticks, not those stupid ticks that everyone thinks are deer ticks).

I'm sure these things are mentioned in this topic but this is definitely more useful than even knowing where it is. LOL

Yea going back asap testing out the new handheld garmin. I programmed the entrance and the actual location so I should be set.  Just kind of put a notch in the belt.  Yea, we parked in the management are and we found two entrances.  One had no metal pole gate and was a fairly wide opening, the other was an opening with a metal gate and a map of the paths.  We took the unlabeled entrance with no luck.
Title: Re: HELL'S GATES: find all info here
Post by: Megster on September 23, 2010, 08:56:53 AM
Because you didn't go far enough.  It takes about an hour and a half to even reach the other path (at the end of Narrow Ln if you look on a map--can't park on the end of Narrow Ln. because that's the Ocean State Cranberry Bog and someone's front yard) that leads to HG (then another 15-30min up the other path) if you go that way.  (I went this way ONCE and my friends got bored before we ever made it, it takes you at least 3, 4 miles across the woods away from HG).

Park there and walk on the actual road (the one you drove on to get there), not the forest paths.  There's an unmarked driveway with a wire rope across and that leads you directly to it.

Is it true that there's nothing left at HG?

I haven't been there since 2006.  I mean if there's nothing there it's really, really not worth going to. LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

wow, so no burned out building or big warehouse with cars? This actually makes me sad.

I mean, not that it was interesting anyway, but now there's nothing to even look at?  (besides the cemetery--good job finding that, not many people can!)

Well, if anyone still feels like wandering around the woods, there's blair-witch-esque rock piles somewhere between the management area and HG, but they're not on any path

I was reading through some of the older posts on this thread and Meg you mentioned Hell's house and someone else mentioned stories of witchcraft in the area. Recently I read RI's essay's on each town's history and they talk about indian inhabitants in W. greenwich. I guess they camped at Rattleledge in Wickaboxet and at Witch's Rock off Hopkin's Hill. Settlers used to consider indians practioners of witchcraft, so maybe that's why so many places in this area seem to affliated with witches/ witchcraft. Just a thought...

It's not okay to call me about Hell's Gates.  Just an FYI.

If you want more information about Hell's Gates feel free to call The Nature Conservancy, who manages the wonderful walking trails around HG.
