Title: Witches Road
Post by: nothinbutsunshine on March 23, 2005, 10:41:23 PM
Witches Road is a weird long winding road in Smithfield.  Its pretty scary.  Ive been there a couple of times.  I know the directions but not gonna post them...the place is already hot with state troopers.  But anyways all of a sudden, you will just see a big tree in the middle of the road(they say if you flash your high beams 3 times at it u will see the guys head in it who died back in 91 or 92.) it didnt work for me though.  There are also graves in the tree on the other side of it if you drive around it.  There used to be a witches house almost at the end of it but it got burnt down by some kids.

First time I went there was back in 1997, I remember it was October, and some friends were tellin me about the road, How if you circle the tree a certain amount of times that some car is suppose to appear and try to take you out. Sounded like the making of an urban legend, but either way, I thought it was an interesting concept.

sure enough it happened to us, got chased by a surburban with its high beams on.
The thing just appeared out of nowhere after we circled the tree a few times. The vechicle chased us through the roads, while we were doing close to 60...a few times it was almost up on our bumper..we eventually left the area and pulled into a liquor store on the main road, and the vechicle waited at the stop sign for 5 minutes
weird thing is we couldnt see the driver, that sent chills up our spine. we left the parking lot eventually, while the surburban just stayed at the stop sign...

weirdest thing ever, I have to admit it was a rush speeding through skinny roads in the woods, it was sorta fun

We never saw the phantom driver again, and we been there many times after.

Years lata, we heard that theres a disgruntal guy who hates it when you circle the tree, cause the headlights of the car flash in his windows of his house, maybe that was the guy who chased us, but it was still weird how it appeared out of nowhere.

I had decided to take a trip last year down witch's road. My boyfriend (ex now haha), brother, and friend were all squished into my Volkswagen Jetta.

Driving down the bone roads, we passed the Witch's tree. Continuing down the winding roads, we finally reached a dirt road. As if the roads weren’t creepy enough, the dirt road and lack of illumination added to the eeriness of the area. I proceeded to drive down the road. If you continue, you pass the entrance to what used to be the Witch’s house. There’s a long barbed wire fence surrounding what used to be an old asylum. They say if you go on the other side of the fence, you can hear screaming. I was nowhere near brave enough to jump the fence. I parked my car facing the fence, and turned my high beams on. Needless to say, that last about two seconds before I got scared and drove away.

A little further down the road, there’s a dirt road that leads up a hill. At the entrance to this road, there are two very large white gates that are always open. I’ve been on multiple excursions up witch’s road, but I had never had the courage to enter this road. Peer pressure lead me to investigate what awaited at the top of this hill. It used to be the home of the parking lot to the asylum. Driving slowly up the dirt road, I made sure to avoid as many holes and rocks as possible. Plastered to one of the trees was a sign “Beware of Dog.” Dogs are associated with the devil, so that sign instantly gave me the chills. I had a radar detector in my car (I have a bit of a lead foot). Well, spirits have the ability to take over any electronic equipment you may have, and that is exactly what happened. My detector began beeping uncontrollably. There’s nothing out there, nor are there cops with radar on in the area. (I know many Smithfield cops). So, this freaked everyone out. We unplugged the radar detector.

We reached the top of the hill and noticed a building. My bf had been up there before, and he was shocked to see that there was a building there that had never been there before. I’m not one to trespass or break any laws, so I immediately freaked out, and turned around. I was about ¾ of the way down the hill. Out of nowhere, a suburban appeared speeding behind me. The lights were blinding. Everyone in the car was screaming at me to speed up, but I knew my Jetta would fall apart if I accelerated any more. I glanced back at my rearview mirror and noticed that the color of the suburban was white. This was easily visible since the truck was about 5 inches away from my bumper. We made it to the bottom of the hill, I took a left turn out of the entrance, sped down the dirt road and eventually reached a more populated and paved road. I swear, my driving was something straight out of “The Fast & The Furious.” My heart was racing as I drove about 50 mph around the winding, narrow roads. Witch’s road has a branch off to another road, Burlingame. Coming from the direction we were, it was in the shape of a “Y”. So, the turn was ridiculously sharp. Any other vehicle probably would have tipped over. Somehow, I miraculously made the turn. I sped up the road, seeing as the suburban had lost a bit of distance behind us. I turned off my headlights, and turned into a driveway. We could still see Witch’s road, and we all saw the Suburban continue going straight.

I have never been so afraid. I was on the verge of having an asthma attack…it was that horrifying. Everyone was impressed with my driving skills though. From that day on, I refuse to travel up witch’s road.

damn katie  you could write a book about witchs road...

ive heard another persons story about a suburban following them at witchs road to...i think this is probobly the same person

.i would of slammed on the brakes if they were 5 inches from your bumper..it would of been there fault if they hit you from behind

so your to afraid to go back to witchs road...you'd feel safe if i went with you to witchs road...i wouldnt let anything happen to you

i like your story...there isnt a  abandoned asylum at witchs road ... its just a abandoned building at witchs road...

i love hot girls that urban explore

nastynate 666 the mark of the beast

take me to witchs road..i want the suberban to show up ...and he'll be the one whos afraid  when he sees nastynate  throw a huge rock through his windshield and spit fake blood on him lol =)

Hm...maybe I should write a book about Witches Road...good idea haha

It may be their fault, but I would have been screwed fro trespassing.

Are you sure it's an abandoned building? Have you ever seen it? Have you ever gotten over the fence?

So, where abouts in Smithfield is this road?  I wouldn't mind checking it out with Windows Live Search.  The Bird's Eye view option is a great way to check out potential places to explore.

This Witch's Tree no longer exists. It was taken down a year ago as it was considered hazardous since branches or the whole tree itself could collapse into the road. Bummer.
