Title: Blast from the past - Old Gallery (text entries only)
Post by: skully on July 23, 2011, 11:02:24 AM
OK, folks.  As we rebuild our old photo repository, I was able to revive the "Storage Bunker" gallery located here:
http://www.insanebunkers.com/cpg133/index.php

Now it's only text.  As mentioned before all of the photos got wiped out in the Great Webhost SNAFU of 200x.  At least we can use the list of galleries and sites as a structure to rebuild.   I know I have tons of photos to upload (snapshot of partial directory below)

For now, you can browse the old areas.   Yes, it really broken and will lead to tons of database error entries so this will be a limited time exposure until we get the new site up and running.

I'm still torn however on whether to go back to Coppermine and of the SMF to Coppermine bridge OR SMF Gallery Pro.  Here's a list of Pro/Cons.   Any comment from the community are appreciatiated.

Coppermine
- Requires a "bridge" to SMF which from allows one-login for a better seam between sites.
- Bridging was not perfect - always a little flacky
- Requires SMF and Coppermine separately to be updated and re-bridged.  Sometimes modifications are wonky.
+ More flexibility - can display all sorts of media including video and audio files, natively.
+ Can tie in Google Map location feature.
+/- Permissions and control from admin side is good, just a royal PITA
+ Batch upload available, multiple methods (FTP, mut- HTML files)
+ Highly customizable
+ No cost for license

SMF Gallery Pro
- Costs $50 to get all the features we need.
+ Totally integrated with forum, no bridge needed.
+ Easier to update, less prone to hackers because so easy to update security fixes
- Less flexible
- Less batch upload options.

You'll notice that many of the user galleries are broken, probably due to the bridge being inactive, will try and fix...

WOW memories!!!  Surprised to see all the text still there.  Kind of makes me wonder if the text with my galleries still exists somewhere too, if not no big deal but it would be nice to have. haha

Did we ever have problems with hackers in the coppermine galleries?  I don't remember anything like that.

User management stays with SMF and Coppermine just borrowed (or "bridged") the users from SMF.   So, the front door for the spammers and hackers remained with SMF.  That's not to say that Coppermine wasn't vunerable.  It is, although I don't think we ever experienced any issues.

If this ever does get fixed I still have my old pics from the Sockanosset Training School (2004), JT Bridge days before demo, and the Narragansett Brewery trolley barn (2003-2005).  Found the remnants in the member galleries, though they're all under the name "Mr. X" now?  Willing to send them over if there's enough interest to get this stocked again.
