Title: Calling Undeath and other eastern CT people (if any)
Post by: Megster on March 04, 2006, 10:00:23 AM
YAY there's finally some eastern CT people on the board!

So...what towns are you familiar with?  I can draw a map of Sterling from memory because that's where I grew up. :)  I used to work last year as a reporter for the free bi-weekly newspaper, The Resident, out of Stonington, so I'm familiar with all the towns along the I-395 corridor.

I'll be posting Eastern CT events in my gallery in the Storage Bunker--so far the following are posted:

--Baltic Mill Fire (Baltic/Sprague)- August 11, 1999
--InterRoyal Mill Fire (Plainfield)- April 26, 2005 (Skully posted my video in the videos section because I emailed it to him since I'm still on dial-up)

Soon to be posted:
--Preston City School Demolition (Preston)- July 4, 2003
--Plainfield High School Demolition (Central Village/Plainfield)- July 15 - August 16, 2005, along with photos of the school from when I attended

Other high-profile places (posted):
--God House (Moosup/Plainfield)- the Norwich Bulletin keeps writing articles about its former inhabitants, who still walk the streets of Moosup.
--Frog Bridge (Willimantic/Windham)

Ok, so stop lurking and post, all of you.

I'm familiar with Baltic, Lisbon, some of Canterbury (very little), Griswold, Voluntown, Norwich, Preston and Yantic. My mom used to live in Baltic and I took more than enough trips through the woods behind the building (miles) and the woods down the road. I once came across a house not far into the woods from the street but didn't go in because a homeless guy was present in the town a lot and I thought he might be in there. It's near the gazebo if I recall correctly.

I'm more of a woods/forest explorer since that's what my friends did. But I've seen and have been in a few abandoned places along the way. No pictures, though... unfortnately.

Awesome, one of my exploring friends lives in Hanover, and my grandmother lives in Baltic.  I didn't start taking pictures until I had a digital camera that went everywhere with me, so unfortunately a lot of the places I used to go no longer exist and I don't even have pictures :(

Live in Coventry, work in Bristol?

Eeeee what a commute to work *that* must be.

I'm the one that lives in Hanover Megster was talking about. Heh. But I go to school in New Britain...so I do THAT every weekend. I can only imagine drive a part of that for work each day. Must suck.

Anything good in Coventry? LOL.

One of my exes grew up there and told me about a neighborhood that was abandoned because of the (planned) expansion of Rt. 84, back when 84 was supposed to run to Providence instead of Sturbridge or whereever it actually goes...He said it was around 1981...something like that. I was wondering if anything might be left?

No, wrong ex and wrong state lol.  It's Rob.  He gave me that tip last April and I never checked it out, for whatever reason.  Maybe because I'm not familiar w/ Coventry?

Well, I knew Chad was from Coventry, RI, I thought maybe you were confused or something. I guess I should have known better? I had no idea where Rob was from as I never met him (good thing I didn't, though. Pfft! I've heard enough).

Rob used to live across the street from an abandoned house, and I always wanted to get in except for the fact that if he sees my car within a 50 mile radius of his apartment, he'll think I'm stalking him.  Which is sad because I only live 16 miles away LOL

Hey Megster, I am not from Ct, I have a buddy that lives in mystic and went to uconn, but that is neither here nor there. What I really wanted to know is if you know anything about Pomfret. I got some fairly interesting intel about a place near there. I dont think there are any pics or posts about this place on here. If anyone else knows anything I would appreciate some info just to make sure this place isnt BS.

Bara Hack?

QuoteFor those of you who live close to Connecticut, you may want to mark the village of Bara Hack on your map. I say to mark it because you will not find it on any maps of Connecticut, at least not any maps made in the last century. For you see Bara Hack is an long abandoned village in the Pomfret Township. unlike Dudleytown, Bara Hack is not known for it's violence or evil nature. In fact, Bara Hack is a rather tranquil place for the most part, except for the sounds.

If you're talking about Bara Hack, I know where it is... but take every precaution to enter WITHOUT A TRACE. Not recommended. No parking, no noise, no asking for directions if you're lost.

You'll ruin it for everyone who doesn't disturb a thing.

Yeah, I wasn't exactly saying you're new or anything... it's just that with places like that, it's tough to keep your entrance undetected... had to make sure everyone knew that it's not easy if you drive up and sneak in afterwards...

Why no trace? Because its on private property? As far as I knew that was out in the middle of the woods and there really wasn't much there.

I've heard that this one like Dudleytown has a history for attracting jackasses so curious people like ourselves won't get time to talk our way out of it-  CT state police have had so much trouble with the place that they make examples out of everybody they catch.  It sucks but from everything I read (instead of the 24 book...) they have a policy of maximum enforcement with this site.  See ya at work in a few man...

I have heard though that if you contact the owners of the property and assure them that you are there only to photograph the grounds for histrorical significance and clear with them how many people you intend to bring, that they have given permission to visit the grounds before.  Just no mention of paranormal or anything "fringe."  Supposedly they are reasonable about it.  I have contact info at home that I can post later.

Ahhh...you guys beat me to this...

One of the articles I am going to write for the front page of the site is about Bara-Hack. I just went for the first time about a month ago...we ended up walking 15 miles total that day because we got turned around in the woods and ended up 10 miles from the car.  We tried flagging down cars but maybe we were too shady...lol

And I'm having a problem with a flying ant infestation in my room at the moment and I'm going to Maine this weekend, so it will be at least next week before I can get the article and pics up...sorry!

I wouldn't be surprised if someone by the name of Blue Bear registers on this site and starts typing in all caps about the site being off limits w/out permission from the owners, but I've seen that almost everywhere that dares mention the name of the village.

I'm all for going again :)

get this - ive only been to bara-hack once... before we left the new haven area me and four others checked at least seven or eight of the flashlights we had and found that all of them worked.  we reached the pomfret area and stopped at the 24hr gas station closest to bara-hack where some shady doper tried starting shit with us for no reason.  we left the gas station and drove to our parking spot.  as we were approaching the parking spot we simultaneously seemed to complain of bad vibes.  we parked and prepared to hike through the woods but when we checked our seven or eight flashlights, none of them worked.

Hey i havent been on here in awhile, but im from plainfield, ct currently living in jewett city. I have tried 2 times 2 get into NSH. Once was on foot with 3 other people it was cold as hell out, my friend parked his car in the commuter parking lot (stupid idea) and we walked down the road and over to the right side heading towards norwich. We looked inside, but saw security, and decided to go on the other side, by this time it was pitch black out. I swear there is something else going on, on that property, its crazy. Why do they parole it so much?? But I really wish they wouldnt demolish it. I want to go inside before they do, does anyone want to or is planning on? If so let me know.

I want to go but they've really kicked up security especially since Utopia is coming.

And you're from Plainfield?  Did you go to PHS?  I graduated in 2002.

Bara-Hack pictures are posted in my gallery...I don't have permissions at the moment to post articles again.

Would like to return again, but I need to find a closer parking spot than where we parked before (we parked at Abington 4 corners (Rt. 44 & Rt. 97) and hoofed it...and then we walked through Bara-Hack up onto Rt. 244.  Not fun...

Well I'm not from eastern Connecticut, but I am from Coventry, RI which is pretty darn close.. I haven't really done much actual exploring since I was younger and used to just do it for fun. I would like to get back into it though and I'm looking for places either in RI or right along the edges to explore first..When you wrote about the abandoned town in coventry were u talking about coventry ri? or no.. because I know this place near my house where there is a burnt down house and a few unfinished foundations around it. Don't really know the story about it though :/

No I was talking about Coventry CT but that spot you're talking about in RI sounds like this spot I'm thinking of right on Tiogue Lake. lol.  Actually 10 years ago it was nicknamed "The Spot" back when the burnt house had a little more of it standing and a shed or two nearby.  Haven't been down there since 2006.

I'm from Eastern CT, I live in Preston not to far from the Norwich State Hospital (though i have yet to get in there, but i'm dying too.

My favorite place to go exploring is Hell Hollow in Pachaug State forest, lots of old foundations and creepy stories about that place.

Hell Hollow is awesome to poke around but I never found any foundations out there?

they're out there but you have to go into the woods a little ways. theres a really cool one off the driving trail off hell hollow rd (that sounds weird.) I have to see if i can find my pictures. I guess there used to be a lot of houses out there and then the state bought them out and let the woods grow in.

Actually in the earlier part of the 20th century there was an arsonist who burned a lot of structures and areas now owned by the state as state forest (but especially places in Rhode Island, like Arcadia and Escoheag).  I've been researching a little-known village that nothing remains of across Rt. 49 from Hell Hollow.  I'll have to take a look for the foundations in the spring!

Hey all....CT here too. Mystic (*Sigh*-it SUCKS!)..from what I hear, there is some fierce sites in the Ledyard/Groton town line area (alot of Native American burial sites), I have also heard the 3 corners up north where RI/MA/CT meet there is a site kind of like Dudleytown, but that is merely hearsay. Who knows?

BTW, Dakiel-where in the hell (pardon the pun) in CT is that? Just wondering.

Yes, those were fires of abandoned places. lol  InterRoyal Mill was abandoned since 1986 (some firebreaks were added in the 90's and that stopped the whole mill from going up, it was 1/2 mile long and only a small section burned, not even half.  Still the fire was huge, I have a video of it up on youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VD8MqsdNh4s.

Baltic Mill had also been abandoned since 1984 or 1986 but I don't have video and even my photos from that are crappy.  There is still a building left at the Baltic Mill but it's in really bad shape.

As for God House, no, it's not abandoned.  It was this house in Moosup that had Bible verses written all over it and its inhabitants never got another place to live after they got evicted.  Someone bought the house and painted over the words, my only picture of it isn't that good because it was taken with my first digital camera

and Frog Bridge isn't abandoned, nice to photograph though.
