Title: An abandoned tour of eastern CT
Post by: MovingUnit on November 14, 2004, 10:35:47 PM
The board's a little slow right now so I figured I'd give it a shot in the arm.  B)

After finding that abandoned farm last week, I thought to myself that where there's one, there has to be a ton more; it's just a matter of finding 'em.  So I grabbed a roadmap, and on my days off this week, I drove down probably every back road in eastern CT.  And JACKPOT!  I was amazed at the number of places I found by putting a little effort, and a lot of miles, in.

Here's a little sampling, just because I like showing you guys my photos.

A little farm near a certain Pequot enterprise:

An abandoned mobile home in the middle of the woods lol:

This one I'm really excited about and going back to soon.  It's an abandoned neighborhood (no not the one at NSH).  There's six or seven houses on a block deep in the woods along with a couple of HUGE abandoned mill complexes and stables on probably fifty acres of land.  I'm really curious about it and am going to do some research on it.  I only got pictures inside one of the houses before the camera ran out of batteries.

Hope you all like them; there will be more pretty soon.

Skully and Dakiel, sorry I couldn't make it out Saturday.  Did you wind up going to Napatree?

I really like the 2nd pic, the one under the silo!
NICE COMPOSITION!
Just the way the light streams thru the broken wall!

You should make some money with your pics.

Thanks MW you're always such a sweetheart.  At one time, I considered putting together a photo exhibit of some kind with my pics with the theme of art in decay or something like that, but I think I'm going to wait until I get a better camera.  I've tried making prints with my current one and they don't come out very nice at all.

Hey, I've *been* to that mobile home with my friend Megan. I recognize it clearly. We called it Birdhouse Mobile home and it's located either in North Stonington or Ledyard (I think technically it's NS, because I checked a road-by-road atlas). Except when we went there, the garage wasn't burned down. We went on June 27, 2003. Pics and everything. We're interested in knowing about the other places seeing as we've been doing this for awhile and we're sort of running out of places to go to (where we won't get caught).

If you want to contact one of us, comment in one of our livejournals.

We'll be *glad* to tell you places in exchange for others!

Actually I checked my pictures of the mobile home and apparently the garage had already burned...my mistake.  We went after dark so I guess we just didn't notice.

After I write a paper I'm going to get to work on posting pictures on my website that I didn't post before now for whatever reasons.

Thanks for sharing Meg.

It really is a small world.  That mobile home is so tiny and in the middle of nowhere I'm still amazed that someone else has actually been to it.

Me too--Zack and I could have died when we saw your pictures, especially since we weren't 100% sure it was the same place until we saw our pictures showed the garage was burned.

That's ok.  I don't care when the road trip is, as long as it's not in the summer.  The horseflies are a bitch, especially in the woods around Hell's Gates.  My friends and I spent a miserable hour and a half lost in those woods when we tried to get to it from the other end (there are many trails around it, and I didn't realize that the trail we were on wouldn't meet up with a trail to Hell's Gates for a couple miles).  There are massive ant hills too, on both sides of many of the trails in the northern end of the woods. I'm just going to use the road from now on.

Spacemonkey--

Are the mobile home, abandoned farm and neighborhood all on the same road?  I drove by the mobile home today (first time in daylight!!) and saw the mailbox from your pictures of the neighborhood, but I didn't see the neighborhood.  And, if I'm right, the farmhouse is semi-hidden from the road by a hill?  (I had to go to Mystic for some Christmas shopping so I didn't have my camera...I was scouting out houses as well lol)  I checked aerial maps for the neighborhood, but I don't know the layout so I don't know if I found it or not.  From the sky, the farmhouse looks huge as hell...that is, if I found the right one.  Zack and I will probably head up there this weekend.

I uploaded the picture of that mailbox to the wrong album (it's now moved); I stopped at it on the way to the neighborhood.  I thought it was interesting because it's a mailbox for nobody's house, just an empty plot of land.  Oh yeah, and good eye spotting it btw.

The three locations are nowhere near each other really.  When you say Mystic for the farm, you're close, but no cigar.  It's right in plain view on a main road.  And the neighborhood's about a half hour away from it.

Ahh. Zack and I wandered around the woods for over an hour yesterday near the mailbox.  LOL.  Actually we ended up on some trails and came out near some big cell phone towers and some other towers for Comcast.  On the way back to my car we stopped at the mobile home...oddly enough it hasn't changed at all.

And as for the farmhouse...we drove down this long driveway where I thought it was, and while the house was very run down, it was obvious that someone lived there.  Thankfully they weren't home.  Hahaha.

I'm heading back to that area today (have to pick up a Christmas present for my mom) so maybe I'll drive around a little more.  I have another vague idea about the neighborhood that I had before I saw the mailbox (haha).

Zack and I checked out the Pequot Properties site and didn't see it listed.  I wonder if it's still for sale?
