Title: Legal access to sites
Post by: Tmac02892 on July 20, 2008, 05:46:31 PM
I know it can be real pain and is usually unsuccessful, but has anyone ever tried to get permission to check out a site?  It just sounds really nice if you could explore a site without worrying about the police or guards etc.
Also, if anyone has tried this and knows the best ways to go about asking for permission?

yeahhh, my grandparents actually asked the guards at the norwich state hospital if they could go in during the day and they said they'd rather have people ask then break in so they know how many people are inside and for their safety, but idkk, it was also a seventy year old couple

I actually contacted everyone from the town of preston, the guards at norwich state, and finally a state office and recieved a call back from some rather high level state folks about gaining access to Norwich State Hosp and a few other CT properties. This is how it went... "We would love to let you in, but technically the state would be liable for any injuries that you may recieve, so no. If i showed proof of insurance that would absolve the state, perhaps." I suppose thats how MTV and other major players get in, they're insured. They did however put me on a list of individuals to notifiy when official tours are conducted and about 2 months later I was surprised to be allowed with a group of real estate and businessmen onto the property. Mainly just walked around the property outside the buildings and  into some of the more modern buildings so they could show that some of the buildings were actually still usable hoping some of the business folks would think about a deal with the town. It was nice though to just wander the grounds and be able to nod at security guards. The funny part was I had already been through the whole site decked out in camo the day after they originally said no.

Its always worth a try to get perission, check with the town halls and they will point you to the right state officials and have a good reason for being there. Curiosity doesn't fly. I used architectural photography and said I only want to see the exteriors not interiors. Figured if i could at least be allowed on the property that would be a foot in the door.

if you got connections defiantly use them but for an average person its pretty risky cuz if you ask and they clearly don't want anyone their it'll probably be hard to enter due to increased security knowing that people are interested

i find that it is a 50/50 propisition to ask. i have worked in the security field for many years and it really all depends on the personality you run into

So far I haven't asked for permission to go on any site.. But really because I'm too lazy find the property owner, etc.

I also don't ask, rather than researching the owner I just go to great pains to ensure the owner doesn't find me.

Exploring with me is a real bitch because I insist on parking like a mile (or 5) away and hoofing it.  LOL

But...this is the reason why I haven't gotten arrested yet.  Playing the stupid girl ("Ummm...I'm lost!" I said, after getting chased around NSH at speeds of 45-50) was also another reason.

I wouldn't mind walking 5 miles to be avoided..

Sometimes if I see an area that appeals as 'eye-candy' to me or anyone of my friends we usually go at night (hence our group name Stealth United.) Honestly I don't see the fun in adventure in exploring when there is no risk involved for getting caught.

There is always a risk, even when you think there isn't.

...or maybe that's just paranoia. LOL
